The Qingshui Patriarch belief originated in Qingshui Rock in Anxi. It has been spread for more than 900 years and spread to Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Xiamen, Longyan, Nanping and other places in Fujian. It has also spread to Chaoshan area in Guangdong, Pingyang area in Zhejiang, as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar and other regions and countries, forming a "Qingshui Patriarch Belief" cultural circle with a population of more than 100 million believers. According to the Qingshui Rock Records published in the 15th year of the Republic of China (1926), Qingshui Patriarch's original name was Chen Rongzu. He became a monk at a young age. His Buddhist name was Pu Zu, also known as Master Ma Zhang, and he was a famous monk in the Northern Song Dynasty. According to the Qingshui Patriarch Biography written by Chen Haoran in the third year of Zhenghe in the Song Dynasty, "Master Ma Zhang has a strict and rigorous practice and can move heaven and earth"; he built many bridges and pavilions, planted many bamboos and trees, prayed to Buddha to ward off disasters, and his footprints were as far as Ting and Zhang, and he was famous in southern Fujian. It was because "the Patriarch was virtuous and did many good deeds during his lifetime" that after his death, "the people were grateful and worshipped him as a Buddha, and the incense was strong". Whenever there was an epidemic, the villagers would respectfully carry the Buddha statue and ask the master to eliminate it; whenever there was a drought, the neighbors and even the prefecture and county would also welcome the Buddha statue and pray for rain to drive away the disaster. Qingshui Patriarch was given a mysterious color by the people, regarded as a god, worshipped, and was conferred four times by the Song court. The belief in Qingshui Patriarch has a long history and rich cultural connotations, which are mainly reflected in the Spring Festival procession for sacrifices and the medicine sticks for divination. The medicine sticks contain rare knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine and are of great religious, cultural and scientific research value. At the same time, the belief in Qingshui Patriarch has a huge influence in Fujian and Taiwan. It is a spiritual bond and bridge connecting compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and plays a special role in the cultural identity, national identity and peaceful reunification of both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
