Feather painting is a folk art craft made of various feathers of flying birds and birds by pure hand-made methods. It has a long history and profound cultural heritage. Among the precious cultural relics unearthed from the Western Han Dynasty Tomb of Mawangdui in Changsha, there are exquisite feather paintings. According to research, Shaoyang feather painting originated in the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty. Shaoyang is located in the southwest of Hunan, with high mountains and dense forests, lush water and grass, and rich feather resources. There has been a tradition of using feather resources since ancient times. Shaoyang feather painting draws on the composition of traditional paintings and the expression techniques of sculpture, bamboo carving, and wood carving. It requires more than 30 processes such as design and creation of drawings, tracing, hair selection, degreasing, bleaching and dyeing, cutting, pasting, and mounting, and the process technology requirements are strict. Shaoyang feather painting artists are good at using flat sticking, stacking sticking, and suspended sticking feather pasting techniques. With the natural colors of feathers of flying birds and poultry such as peacocks, pheasants, mandarin ducks, pigeons, ducks, geese, and chickens, according to the requirements of creation, they delicately express the landscapes and characters, with bright colors, lifelike images, fine workmanship, and ingenuity. Shaoyang Feather Painting Factory was established in 1972 and is one of the four major feather painting production areas in China. With landscape, figure and scenery paintings as the main features, there are more than 50 varieties of flat-painting, three-dimensional and semi-three-dimensional relief paintings. Shaoyang Feather Painting combines appreciation, practicality and collection value. It expresses the romantic artistic conception of Chinese classical painting and the realistic expression of artists with colorful feathers. It has high artistic value, practical value and economic value. It has been exported to 27 countries and regions including Southeast Asia, Japan, Europe and the United States, Hong Kong and Macao. The main representative works of Shaoyang Feather Painting include large wall hangings "Huangshan Beihai" and "Bird Paradise", flat-painted rotating scroll painting "Wealth Picture", three-dimensional hanging screen "Eagle Picture", seat screen "White Egret", standing screen "Peony Picture" and so on. Due to the shortage of feather painting resources and various reasons, Shaoyang Feather Painting is on the verge of extinction. Now there is only a family workshop-style feather painting factory opened by the famous feather painting artist and Chinese painter He Binyang.
