Blue printed cloth was originally called "flower-watering cloth" and was called "medicine-spotted cloth" in the Song Dynasty. It is a kind of textile printing and dyeing product that has been circulated among the people in my country for a long time. Hunan Province is the main production area of blue printed cloth in my country. The blue printed cloth printing and dyeing in Fenghuang County and Shaoyang County are outstanding in all aspects. The blue printed cloth printing and dyeing skills in Tuojiang Town, Fenghuang County have a long history. Blue printed cloth appeared in the Western Han Dynasty. Song Yingxing's "Heavenly Creations" in the Ming Dynasty recorded that indigo can be extracted from blue grass, and also detailed the indigo making methods at that time. The blue printed cloth printing and dyeing skills are divided into two categories: pure blue printed cloth printing and dyeing and colorful blue printed cloth printing and dyeing: pure blue printed cloth has a plain surface and no patterns, and is generally used to make clothes and headscarves; colorful blue printed cloth has complex patterns and is generally used to make quilt covers, mattress sheets, tent eaves, aprons, waists, door curtains, tablecloths, aprons, etc. Before printing and dyeing, it needs to go through the processes of mounting paper, tracing, engraving, oiling, seasoning, scraping, dyeing, etc. After dyeing, it also needs to go through the process of drying, washing, rolling, and grinding (also called "stepping on the cloth"). Liu Dapao, a famous artist in Tuojiang Town, created a double-sided blue printed cloth based on the single-sided blue printed cloth. Its printing and dyeing methods are relatively complicated and have very precious craftsmanship value. There were hundreds of people engaged in the printing and dyeing industry in Tuojiang Town in the past, but now there are only more than ten small family workshops left, and most of the printing and dyeing craftsmen are old. Under this situation, the printing and dyeing skills of Phoenix blue printed cloth are in danger of being lost. Shaoyang blue printed cloth began around the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, and has a history of more than 1,400 years. According to the "Shaoyang County Chronicles", at that time, Shaoyang people created a printing and dyeing technique based on the Miao batik technique that used soybean milk and lime instead of wax. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, due to convenient water and land transportation, Shaoyang became the largest blue printed cloth production base in Central and South China. Shaoyang blue printed cloth has simple patterns, fine dots and lines, and focuses on large-area contrast and detailed depiction, with a fresh and simple style. Most of its patterns are drawn from folk legends and traditional auspicious patterns, expressing the yearning and pursuit for a better life. With the development of the times and the changes in social lifestyles, the printing and dyeing techniques of Phoenix and Shaoyang blue printed cloth have been impacted by mechanical printing and dyeing, and are declining day by day. They have fallen into an endangered situation and are in urgent need of rescue and protection.
