The Wudang Mountain Temple Fair is a folk custom evolved from the unique pilgrimage activities of believers, which is popular in the Wudang Mountain area of Shiyan City, Hubei Province. There are two temple fairs every year, from the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month to the 16th day of the third lunar month of the following year, and from the first day of the ninth lunar month to the tenth day of the ninth lunar month. Among them, the temple fairs on the third day of the third lunar month and the ninth day of the ninth lunar month are the most grand. The Wudang Mountain Temple Fair began in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, flourished in the Song Dynasty and prospered in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The main activities include pilgrimage, holding fasting and offering Taoist temples, and holding folk art activities. There are three forms of pilgrimage: one is to offer incense at the incense meeting, the second is to offer incense by Taoist believers, and the third is to offer scattered incense. The Wudang Taoist temple mainly performs small and large ceremonies. The small ceremonies take one day, and the large ceremonies take three days. During the temple fair, people can go hiking, watch lanterns and scenic spots, watch Wudang martial arts competitions, and enjoy performances such as fireworks. The Wudang Mountain Temple Fair is a microcosm of local folk life. It has greatly enriched the cultural life of the local people and has high value in folklore and historical and cultural research.
