Puqiao Tide God Festival is a festival to commemorate Chen Xian (Chen Lao Taigong), a hero in flood control. In Shengzhou, there are Chen Lao Taigong Temples (also called Chen Hou Temples) in villages of all sizes, and the Chen Hou Temple in Puqiao Village, Lushan Street is the largest and most popular. Because Chen Lao Taigong was from Puqiao Village, Lushan Street, Shengzhou, his name was Chen Xian, his courtesy name was Xiwen, and his pseudonym was Kaishan. Chen Xian had a lifelong relationship with water and made great contributions to flood control, bringing peace and prosperity to the people on both sides of the Yanxi River, Cao'e, and Qiantang River. In ancient times, the Yanxi River often flooded, and it was Chen Xian who built embankments along the river, planted reeds and bamboo along the embankments, and built gates to reduce flow in narrow places, so that it could discharge floods and prevent droughts, and benefit irrigation and benefit the people. During the Shaoxi period of the Song Dynasty, the Yellow River burst its banks. Chen Xian, under the imperial order, led civilian workers to control the dangerous embankment of the Caizhou section of the Yellow River, and achieved success. During the Tianxi period (1205-1207), he was appointed as an official in the Ministry of Personnel and was in charge of controlling the Qiantang tide. At that time, people regarded Qiantang tide as a "water monster" and passers-by were often harmed by the tide. Chen Xian devoted himself to studying the rise and fall of tides for decades, mastered the laws, summarized the theories of various tidal theories, formulated emergency measures for Qiantang tide, effectively controlled the Qiantang tide, and was hailed as the "living tide god". In the third year of Shaoding in the Southern Song Dynasty (1230), Chen Xian died of illness due to overwork and was buried in his hometown Puqiao. Chen Xian spent his life controlling water and benefiting the people, and was deeply loved by the people. He was revered by the people after his death. There are many beautiful legends about him among the people. He is a real "tide god" and is included in the national sacrificial rites. In order to commemorate the ancestors, the villagers of Puqiao, Shengzhou built Lingji Pavilion in front of the tomb of Chen Xian and his wife, and later built Lingji Temple. In the second year of Mingshun (1458), Lingji Temple was rebuilt and expanded into Chenhou Temple. Incense is offered all year round, praying for peace and well-being, good weather and good harvest every year. The 18th day of the eighth month of every year (in the lunar calendar) is the most solemn day for worshipping Chen Hou Temple, commonly known as "Chen Lao Taigong Meeting Day", and officially known as "Tide God Festival". Puqiao's "Tide God Festival" is crowded with tourists and merchants, and is extremely lively. On the first day, in front of Chen Hou, sacrificial texts are read, sacrificial offerings are made, and worship is paid in order. The play is performed for three days and three nights, and almost all men, women, and children from all over the country come to worship, and the temple activities push the temple fair to 0. The sacrificial text read at the Puqiao Tide God Festival is a summary of Chen Xian's life, integrating the culture of the sea tide, the river culture, and the culture of the Shanxi River. It has both profound cultural heritage and great educational significance.
