Taishun is located in the southern border of Zhejiang and is known as the "hometown of puppets". Yaofa puppets are a unique traditional form. Their puppet performances are driven by gunpowder, which is unique among other puppet performances; the combination of puppet performances in fireworks performances is also unique among other fireworks performances. "Taishun Yaofa puppets" are puppet shows that combine fireworks with puppets. In Taishun, they are called Qionghua puppets. Artists mix puppet shapes such as opera characters and mythological characters with fireworks and set them off. Driven by fireworks, puppets fly in the flames, colorful and lifelike. It is often performed in temple fairs, sacrifices, folk festivals and other activities. According to investigations and textual research, Taishun Yaofa puppets have been popular in Taishun for more than 300 years. Chinese puppet shows "originated from the Han Dynasty and flourished in the Tang Dynasty". There are five major categories: hanging silk puppets, rod puppets, water puppets, Yaofa puppets, and meat puppets. Among them, water puppets and Yaofa puppets were once believed to have been lost in China. However, after investigation by relevant departments in Taishun, it is believed that the Qionghua puppets that have long existed among the people of Taishun are Yaofa puppets. The discovery of Yaofa puppets, which have been passed down for hundreds of years, in Taishun provides a valuable example for the study of puppetry in my country. However, due to the fading of many folk customs, changes in entertainment forms and considerations of public safety, the space for Yaofa puppets to survive has gradually shrunk. In addition, due to its complex and delicate craftsmanship, there are few new people inheriting it at this stage. The artists who make Yaofa puppets are all old, and this precious traditional opera form is on the verge of extinction and urgently needs protection.
