Beginning of Summer, one of the twenty-four solar terms, represents the beginning of summer. The Banshan Beginning of Summer Custom is a series of folk activities of sending off spring and welcoming summer that have been passed down from generation to generation by the people in the Banshan area of Hangzhou before and after the Beginning of Summer. It is the practical knowledge and wisdom of the local people to coordinate the rhythm of local production and life, and expresses their good wishes to follow the time and pray for blessings and auspiciousness. Every year on the Beginning of Summer, the locals start to make black rice, using the juice extracted from the leaves of a local wild shrub called "black rice leaves" to cook rice. The cooked rice is black, the rice grains are distinct, sweet and soft, and can also be added with broad beans, peas, bacon, wild bamboo shoots, etc. according to the taste of each family. It is not easy to get heatstroke after eating in summer, and it also has the effect of preventing mosquito bites and dispelling wind and detoxification. In 2016, the Banshan Beginning of Summer custom was listed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO as an important part of the "Twenty-Four Solar Terms". In 2020, the Banshan Beginning of Summer custom was included in the National List of the Five Batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Items.
