Cattail weaving technique (Renhe cattail weaving)
Cattail weaving technique (Renheji cattail weaving), an extension project of traditional skills in the sixth batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage in Huai'an. The cattail weaving technique has a long history in Mingzuling Town, Xuyi County, and has a history of hundreds of years. Most of the residents in the Mingzuling area migrated from other places, living by the water, using local resources and materials to cut cattails to weave daily necessities and craft items, from straw curtains to shelter from wind and rain, to cattail mats for beds, from cattail shoes to cattail fans for coolness, and even cattails are woven into small objects for appreciation, small fish, shrimps and various small animals. In the process of cattail weaving, the cattails are generally cut and collected first, dried in the sun, and cannot be exposed to water to avoid mold and insect infestation. Then, according to the texture of the cattail, it is used to weave cattail mats, cattail fans, or other small items, such as dragonflies, lobsters, water snakes and other animals. The patterns in weaving include holding two flowers and clipping flowers. The birth of Renhe Jipu weaving is closely related to the local natural environment and product conditions. It is also a portrayal of the production and life of the local people.
