The purple sand pottery making technique is unparalleled in the world. It uses a purple sand clay material with a special granular structure and double pore structure (specifically purple clay, red clay, Benshan green clay, etc.) produced in Yixing as raw materials, and uses more than 100 homemade tools. After the steps of beating the clay pieces, beating the body tube (round vessels), inlaying the body tube (square vessels) or combining inlay with sculpture (flower vessels), surface polishing, pottery carving and decoration, the pottery products are finally completed. The finished products of Yixing purple sand pottery making technique are represented by teapots. Its objects include different styles such as polished vessels (divided into round vessels and square vessels), ribbed vessels and flower vessels. Purple sand vessels are generally not glazed inside and outside, and their beauty lies in their pure natural texture and texture. As a top-grade tea set, its good air permeability allows people to fully enjoy the color, aroma and taste of tea. Therefore, purple sand pottery is in line with the traditional Chinese tea culture and has become an important part of tea culture. With the development of Chinese tea culture, after the late Ming Dynasty, purple sand pottery artists have created a series of decorative techniques such as pottery carving, inlay (inlaying gold, silver, jade, color mud, mother-of-pearl, mahogany, porcelain flowers, etc.), tinning, lacquer, mud painting, pastel, glaze, enamel, tracing, relief, carving, twisted mud, mold printing, and stickers after long-term exploration. Among them, the most representative is pottery carving, which is a perfect combination of poetry, epigraphy, calligraphy and painting, seal carving art and purple sand making skills. It is in line with the traditional aesthetic standards of the Chinese nation, especially the aesthetic taste of the literati class. Therefore, purple sand skills have always been rich in the dual characteristics of practicality and artistic appreciation. After thousands of years of inheritance, the living space, technical characteristics, derivative genealogy, and traditional cultural connotations of purple sand pottery are still in good condition. However, since the raw material of purple clay pottery is a scarce mineral resource, it has been over-exploited and abused. Coupled with the impact of industrialization, the number of fine purple clay pottery is decreasing, and the outstanding purple clay pottery making skills have been severely impacted. How to pass on this excellent folk handicraft has become an urgent issue to be solved.
