🎧  Listen to Introduction

The earliest source of Gaoyou folk songs can be traced back to the Neolithic Age. They are traditional folk songs widely circulated in the production and life of people in Gaoyou Lake and Lixiahe in Gaoyou City. They mainly include calls, ditties, love songs and various life and customs ballads, children's songs, antiphonal songs, etc. They have the gentle characteristics of southern Jiangsu folk songs and the hearty temperament of northern folk songs. The rhythm is gentle and light, and has a strong Lixiahe water village style. Gaoyou folk songs have different characteristics from folk songs in other places. Classic representative works: Counting Duck Eggs, Gaoyou Northwest Township, Sending My Husband to Join the Army, My Hometown in Gaoyou Gaoyou folk songs have appeared, exhibited and performed at the Shanghai World Expo, the First China Farmers Art Festival, the 12th China Shanghai International Art Festival, the Second National Folk Music and Dance Festival in 1957, the National Cultural and Art Workers' Congress in 1960, the Spring Festival Gala, the Second CCTV-7 Image Song Music Television Show (won the Best City Song Award in the City Category), China Jianghai Culture and Art Exhibition Week, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (Jiangsu) Art Festival, CCTV-7 "Homeland" column, and the 2012 CCTV "Our Festival China Long Song Journey" series. On October 18, 2007, the China Folk Artists Association officially awarded Gaoyou the honorary title of China Folk Song Hometown, and Gaoyou became the only Chinese Folk Song Hometown in the country at that time. Compared with the folk song towns such as Guangxi, Yunnan, and Xinjiang, Gaoyou folk songs, located in the Lixiahe area of Zhongsu, seem to be little known. On June 7, 2008, Gaoyou folk songs were approved by the State Council to be included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage. On June 6, 2010, at the invitation of the Jiangsu Provincial Organizing Committee of the Shanghai World Expo, we participated in the centralized rehearsal of the Jiangsu Provincial Pavilion Activity Week of the World Expo. It is reported that the organizing committee has basically determined that the Gaoyou folk song "Counting Duck Eggs" will be the performance program of the Jiangsu Provincial Pavilion Activity Week of the World Expo from June 13 to June 17. Gaoyou folk songs shined at the Shanghai World Expo.
