Qidong Reed Weaving Craft
Qidong reed weaving craft is a traditional skill project in the third batch of representative projects of Nantong's municipal intangible cultural heritage. Qidong reed belongs to the eastern coastal reed area and is the best among the 84 varieties and 6 variants of reed. It is both hard and soft, and is known for its toughness. It is the earliest building material and daily necessities commonly used by Qidong people. In the early days, Qidong people used "reed firewood" to weave "ring cave houses" for shelter. Later, they used "reed heads" to weave "reed fence walls", "reed fence doors" and "reed fence beds" for houses; shoes made of "reed flowers" to keep warm are called "reed flower boots"; quilts filled with "reed flowers" are called "reed flower quilts"; drying tools that connect "reed heads" with ropes are called "curtains"; "reed heads" pressed into pieces and woven together to dry grain are called "reed doors"; and the roof of houses woven with "reed heads" is called "reed weaving tiles". Although Qidong people no longer use reeds as building and weaving materials, the reed weaving craft and reed complex are deeply imprinted in the hearts of Qidong people.
