Shogunate Climbing Customs
The custom of climbing the heights of the shogunate is a folk custom item in the second batch of representative items of municipal intangible cultural heritage. In the folk culture of my country, six is a "yin number" and nine is a "yang number". The ninth day of the ninth lunar month every year is a yang day, so it is called the "Double Ninth Festival". The Double Ninth Festival is a very important festival among the people. Various activities are held on this day, such as outings, climbing, chrysanthemum appreciation, inserting dogwood, eating Chongyang cakes, etc. Climbing is the main custom of the Double Ninth Festival. The ancients believed that climbing on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month could avoid disasters, so the Double Ninth Festival was called the "Climbing Festival". It is said that this custom began in the Eastern Han Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,700 years. Later, climbing mountains on the Double Ninth Festival gradually evolved into an activity for people to get close to nature, exercise and relax. The custom of climbing the heights of the shogunate in Xiaguan (now in Gulou District) is a folk cultural activity that has been circulated in Nanjing in history, mainly concentrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month every year. The custom of climbing the Mufu Mountain is a folk belief and custom with a unique cultural background and cultural connotation. It has formed a unique folk culture phenomenon in Nanjing. The "Mufu Mountain Climbing" activity originated in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. At that time, every "Double Ninth Festival", people would come to Mufu Mountain to climb the mountain and pray for blessings. People stroll along the river on the north side of Mufu Mountain and look up at the mountain. They can see exquisite karst wonders everywhere. The green pines and green grass dotted between the cliffs of the caves and gullies show a vigorous vitality. Looking at the Yangtze River from afar at dawn and dusk, the sunset is dyed, the river water is like a silk, and the sails come and go from east to west, which can make the viewer sigh. It is said that the name of Mufu Mountain was because Sima Rui, the emperor of Jin Yuan, ordered Wang Dao to set up a shogunate on the mountain to prevent the invasion from the north after he crossed the river to Nanjing to build his capital. The latest research shows that around the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the name of Mofu Mountain was already near the current Mufu Mountain. It may have been passed down orally several times later, and Mofu Mountain was changed to Mufu Mountain. Among the "48 Scenic Spots of Jinling" selected in the Qing Dynasty, "Muyan Scenic Area" accounts for six scenes (Mufu Climbing, Bodhidharma Ancient Cave, Yongji River, Hualong Beautiful Land, Jiashan Scriptures, Yanji Sunset), ranking first among the scenic belts in Nanjing. It is said that Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty went to Mufu five times during his six trips to the south of the Yangtze River. The poems and verses of literati and poets of all dynasties praising the scenery of Mufu and singing about climbing high to pray for blessings have been passed down through the ages.
