🎧  Listen to Introduction

Suzhou small wooden furniture making skills, a traditional skills project in the second batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage. The fine craftsmanship of rosewood furniture was born in the middle of the Ming Dynasty in Nanjing, Suzhou, Yangzhou and other Jiangnan regions of Jiangsu. Since then, it has grown and developed, and has been highly respected by the world. It has been passed down from generation to generation and has had a huge influence on the world. Major museums around the world have collections of cultural relics of fine Chinese rosewood furniture. The emergence of fine craftsmanship of rosewood furniture has had a huge impact on the world furniture design industry in the past and present. The world's classic furniture design works all contain traditional elements of fine craftsmanship of rosewood furniture. There are many research results on the fine craftsmanship of rosewood furniture at home and abroad, such as "Chinese Rosewood Furniture Picture Study" compiled by German Gustav Eck in 1934; "Appreciation of Ming-style Furniture" and "Research on Ming-style Furniture" by Wang Shixiang; "Identification of Ming and Qing Furniture" by Wang Zhengshu; "Su-style Furniture of Ming and Qing Dynasties" by Pu Anguo; "Ming-style Furniture Carving Art" by Wang Nianxiang, etc. For a long time, domestic and foreign scholars have limited their research on the fine craftsmanship of rosewood furniture to the content of categories, names, patterns, and generations, and have not involved and developed the fine craftsmanship of rosewood furniture and traditional skills. Now we find that the craftsmanship of the fine craftsmanship of rosewood furniture is the core part of its development, especially its mortise and tenon structure and soft drawer weaving technology. From ancient times to the present, the craftsmanship of the fine craftsmanship of rosewood furniture has always been passed down from generation to generation by the folks through oral and practical teaching. There are few written records in history books, and it has developed slowly in modern times. At present, with the rapid development of the global economy and the tide of mechanization, traditional handicrafts are in danger of being swallowed up again. Now, there are very few descendants of rosewood furniture fine craftsman under the age of 40 who learn this craft from their parents. If this continues, in another 40 or 50 years, I am afraid that we will face the crisis of the loss of traditional craftsmanship. This is worth pondering, and our generation will also bear the responsibility of the loss of national traditional craftsmanship. We will collect and organize information from all aspects, and work with universities, museums, traditional furniture factories, and folk craftsmen to develop the "Standards for Fine Production of Redwood Furniture" through research, so as to protect the inheritance of fine traditional production skills of redwood furniture. Through the formulation of standards, we will regulate the current development of the industry, develop folk traditional production techniques, and continuously expand the talent team. We will make very limited precious and rare woods into perfect art treasures according to the process standards, making them more valuable and passed on to future generations.
