Gourd painting is a traditional art project in the second batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage. Gourd painting has existed since ancient times. The saying "painting a gourd according to its appearance" shows that gourd painting, as a folk handicraft, has a long history. China has a history of planting gourds for more than 7,000 years. Gourds are closely related to the life, production and entertainment of the Chinese nation with their beautiful shape, special texture and wide range of uses. A rich and colorful gourd culture has been formed from this. However, due to various reasons, the art of gourd painting has never formed an independent and stable category in Chinese folk art and has almost been lost. Mr. Zhang Miao, out of his love for traditional culture and folk art and his desire to develop handicrafts with Nanjing characteristics, began to develop painted gourds in the late 1980s. The gourd paintings he made were known as the "Jinling Gourd King", and he took the stage name "Jinling Gourd Zhang". Hand-painting on gourds is time-consuming and laborious, and professional practitioners are rare. Therefore, it is necessary to protect and support the production of Jinling Bao Gourd so that it can be passed on and formed on a large scale.
