The Xiangjiang Dragon Boat Race in Watang Town is a traditional folk sports event held during the Dragon Boat Festival at the old Xiangjiang wharf in Watang Town. The Xiangjiang Dragon Boat Race refers to the Dragon Boat Race held in the Xiangjiang area. It is a traditional folk sports event jointly held by 8 participating teams from Xiangjiang Village, Xinjiang Village and Shangjiang Village. It has a history of more than 300 years. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, people on both sides of the Xiangjiang River spontaneously held dragon boat races every Dragon Boat Festival. Many wooden boats gathered in Xiangjiang from different directions on this day and competed freely. Since the founding of New China, there has been a unified Dragon Boat Race here. From the late 1960s to the mid-1970s, it was interrupted due to historical reasons and resumed in 1982. Since then, except for the suspension in 2003 due to the "SARS" incident, wonderful dramas have been staged every year. The Xiangjiang Dragon Boat Race not only inherits traditions and commemorates the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan, but also highlights the unique local customs of Xiangjiang. In the past, navigation on the Yujiang River was difficult. The water was shallow and unfavorable in the dry season, and floods were rampant in the rainy season, often causing boats to capsize and drown people. The locals built temples at the Xiangjiang Pier to worship and pray for blessings. They also held dragon boat races every Dragon Boat Festival to worship the Dragon King and pray for peace and happiness. The dragon boat complex is deeply rooted in the hearts of most Xiangjiang people. Even if time passes quietly, it cannot be erased. Every Dragon Boat Festival, there will always be a large number of Xiangjiang people who work outside and rush back from all over the country to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival and watch the dragon boat races. If Xiangjiang people do not watch the dragon boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival, it is equivalent to not celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival. Every year on the Dragon Boat Festival, a series of activities are held, including dragon boat racing, offering sacrifices to Qu Yuan, reciting Chinese classic poems, and dragon and lion dance performances. Eight dragon boat teams from villages compete fiercely on the river. On the river bank, teachers and students face the river and recite Chinese classic poems. The sound of poetry echoes the sound of gongs and drums of the dragon boat team on the river. The sound of gongs and drums, firecrackers, and cheers are endless, and the scene is quite spectacular. Many foreign tourists, photography friends, and people from surrounding counties and districts come here to watch. There are tens of thousands of spectators. In recent years, the scale of the Xiangjiang Dragon Boat Race and the excitement of the competition have "kept pace with the times" and have increasingly become a name card and a major brand of Gangnan festival folk customs!
