Jiufeng Town, Lechang City, is located in the northern part of Guangdong Province and the southern part of Nanling Mountains. There are many peaks in the area. Farmers go straight to the mountains, cut down trees on the mountains, and climb the slopes to farm. They sing to relieve boredom when they are lonely, and express their feelings with songs when they are affectionate. The initial name was "singing folk songs", and because this kind of folk song tunes are sung in Jiufeng area, they are collectively called "Jiufeng folk songs". There are five tunes in "Jiufeng Mountain Songs": "Liu Shamei", "Xia Nanjing", "Guoshanbang", "Jiufeng Mountain Songs", "Niuwei Village Mountain Songs". "Liu Shamei" sings about labor, trade and life related to wood, so it is also called "Liu Shamei's Fir Songs". The lyrics have been used from previous generations to the present day without any changes and only this one word; "Xia Nanjing Tune" is used for men and women to express their feelings to each other, and is mostly used for duets. Most of the singers are young people; "Guoshanbang Tune" is sung on high mountains, with a high pitch, long and casual notes, and the lyrics do not require neatness, and there can even be music without words. The lyrics of "Jiufeng Mountain Songs" cover a wide range and are all-encompassing. Anything can be sung in this tune, and it is the most widely used among the people; "Niuwei Village Mountain Songs" are slightly sad, generally sung by women to tell their thoughts. "Jiufeng Mountain Songs" have extremely high artistic value, entertainment value, folklore research value, and practical value. The artistic value is reflected in the diversity of tunes, the beauty of pitch, and the unique rhythm that is different from other Hakka folk songs; the entertainment value is reflected in the fact that it entertains others and oneself, allows free participation, full play, and is refreshing; the value of folk custom research lies in the fact that the local customs, folkways, and appearance of the people at that time can be discovered and excavated from the lyrics; the practical value is that information can be conveyed through singing, and its propaganda and educational functions are irreplaceable by other forms.
