🎧  Listen to Introduction

Kaiding Festival is a traditional folk festival in Yuer Village, Shekou, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. The residents of Yuer Village are all immigrants whose ancestral home is Haifeng, Guangdong. Celebrating Kaiding Festival is an old custom from Chaoshan and Hailufeng. At that time, the birth of a boy was celebrated on his first birthday. Families who gave birth to boys had to burn incense and light candles in front of the altar around the Lantern Festival of the first month of the following year, and light lanterns, and then hang them in the auditorium or at the door of the house, praying for more boys, commonly known as hanging lanterns and lighting lanterns. They also had to invite elders and parents of the same clan, relatives and friends to their homes to drink Kaiding tea (also known as vegetable tea locally) to celebrate the birth of a boy. Later, the custom of celebrating Kaiding Festival and drinking Kaiding tea on the thirteenth day of the first month gradually formed. After the ancestors of Yuer Village immigrated to Shekou more than a hundred years ago, they had a difficult life in their early years and were unfamiliar with the place. They hoped that their family would be prosperous. At the same time, celebrating Kaiding Festival became a good way for people to gather in a foreign land to bless each other and strengthen unity. Therefore, this custom has been passed down to this day. With the development of the times, the connotation of Kaiding Festival has been constantly updated. In the past, lanterns were hung for the birth of boys, and later lanterns were also hung for the birth of girls. Now it has become a common festival for all villagers, and every family hangs red lanterns. Now, on the thirteenth day of the first lunar month, Yuer Village will set up colorful gatehouses, beat gongs and drums, set off firecrackers, perform lion dances, set up stages for plays, and celebrate Kaiding Festival happily. Every family makes Kaiding tea to welcome relatives and friends, and also welcomes strangers to visit. This is a kind of tea that combines eating and drinking tea, and combines vegetables, meat, grain, tea, and soup. It tastes unique. On this day, villagers walk from street to street, wish each other well, and go to any family they want to wish well to have Kaiding tea. Kaiding tea is eaten until the early morning of the next day. Kaiding Festival has a long history. Through some of the festival forms that have been passed down, we can study the living conditions of people in agricultural society. From the perspective of historical materialism, attaching importance to the birth of a newborn child means attaching importance to life. This is also a very meaningful topic for our current emphasis on people-oriented thinking and the human living environment, reflecting the historical value of this folk activity. Making Kaiding tea is an integral part of the food culture of South Guangdong and has certain cultural value. Celebrating the Kaiding Festival strengthens communication and solidarity among relatives, friends and neighbors, and welcomes outsiders to integrate into the community, which also has certain social value.
