"Traveling through Tongji" means that every year on the 16th day of the first lunar month, Foshan villagers cross the "Tongji Bridge" to pray for good weather and good harvests in the coming year, and their wishes come true. It was originally an ordinary folk custom, but later became a large-scale folk activity participated by the whole town, and it has been more than 300 years. Tongji Bridge is one of the earliest bridges built in Foshan. According to the "Foshan Zhongyi Township Chronicles": the bridge was originally a wooden pedestrian bridge built by nearby villagers. After returning to Foshan, Li Daiwen, the Minister of Revenue of the Ming Dynasty and a villager, saw that the bridge had been in disrepair for a long time, he advocated the construction of the bridge in the fifth year of Tianqi (1625). The following year, it was completed and named "Tongji Bridge", which means "the bridge is named Tongji, and it must be connected before there is Ji", "with justice, it is connected, and with prosperity, it is Ji". Because the bridge spans Foshan Creek (a tributary of Dongping River before the Ming Dynasty), it can reach four townships by water and neighboring villages by land. It is the only way to Shunde and Panyu, an important transportation artery in Foshan, and an important channel for Foshan's commercial exchanges. Therefore, in order to have a good business in the coming year, the merchants in Foshan walked across Tongji Bridge to curry favor, which gradually became a custom and gave rise to the widely spread saying with distinct local characteristics, "Walking through Tongji Bridge, no closed-door", which has a distinct local flavor. Now, this ancient custom has gradually been given a modern color. For example, in 2000, the "Foshan City Donates Love and Money to the Lantern Festival Ten Thousand People" event was held; in 2005, the Culture, Radio, Television, Press and Publication Bureau of Chancheng District produced a large lettuce lantern to advocate bringing vegetables (money) home, and used the proceeds from the auction of the lettuce lantern as donations to Foshan's welfare undertakings; in 2006, the "Walking through Tongji Bridge to Bring Money Home" Wanjia Tongji series of cultural activities were organized, injecting new cultural connotations into the ancient custom. In addition to local residents, it also attracted more and more people from surrounding areas and foreigners who came to Foshan to work to join the activities. This spontaneous folk activity has enhanced the public's cognition and identity with Foshan through the active guidance of the government. Now, the "Xing Tongji" activity plays a great role in building a cultural city, creating a city's cultural business card, and building a harmonious society.
