Compiled by Wang Jinpeng Penglai is a fascinating historical and cultural city. Penglai, as the name of a sacred mountain, began in the Warring States Period. The "Classic of Mountains and Seas, Hai Nei Bei Jing" records: "Penglai Mountain is in the sea, with immortals on it. The palaces are all made of gold and jade, and the birds and beasts are all white. It looks like clouds when you look at it. It is in the Bohai Sea." "Records of the Emperor Wu of the Shiji" records: "In the Jianzhang Palace, a large liquid was built, with Penglai, Fangzhang, and Yingzhou in it, like the sacred mountains, turtles and fish in the sea." From King Wei of Qi to the Qin Emperor and Han Wu, the craze for seeking immortality was repeated, and various myths and legends were widely circulated. In the past, due to the frequent appearance of mirages, the people said that three sacred mountains appeared in the sea. Everything on the mountains was white, the palaces were made of pure gold and silver, and there were many towering trees on the mountains. The fruits of the mountains could make people immortal. In order to unify himself for ten thousand years, Qin Shihuang came here to seek the elixir of immortality. He stood by the sea, looking out at the sea, and saw a red light at the end of the sea. He asked the Taoist priest what it was, and the Taoist priest replied that it was the fairy island. Qin Shihuang was very happy and asked what the fairy island was called. The Taoist priest was unable to answer for a while, but suddenly saw water plants floating in the sea. He suddenly had an idea and named it "Penglai". Penglai became a synonym for "fairyland". The legend of Penglai can be divided into four categories: legends about the origin of "Penglai Fairyland", such as Pengcaohaolai and Taoist priests looking for immortals; legends about looking for immortals and seeking medicine, such as the immortal medicine and Penglai immortals, Qin Huang's eastward search, etc.; legends about the residence of immortals, such as the legend of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, the legend of Laojun's teachings, and the legend of the Seven Fairies; legends about place names, such as the legend of the origin of Yujiakeng, Wolu Village, Milukeng Village, and Xianrenjiao Lijia Village, etc. There is a painted river under Penglai, on which there are nine ancient bridges, including Huixian Bridge, Yingxian Bridge, Laibin Bridge, and Yingbin Bridge. It is said that nine beggars settled here, eight of whom were blind, and the remaining one had only one eye. When they went out, the one-eyed beggar led the way in front, and the other eight supported each other's shoulders. They seemed slow, but even if you wanted to catch up, even a fast horse could not catch up. They begged at the market during the day and slept under Laibin Bridge at night. These nine beggars once planted locust trees, jujubes, willows, and peaches outside Penglai City, leaving green shade and fruit fragrance for future generations. Later generations called these nine beggars "One Eye Nine Immortals". There is a beautiful legend behind many village names in Penglai. In 644 AD, Emperor Taizong of Tang led his army to attack Goryeo. On the way, he passed a small village in the southern mountainous area of Penglai. The villagers were fortunate to meet the emperor's holy carriage and were very happy, so they asked the emperor to give a name, so there was the name of Yujiagou. Emperor Taizong of Tang stationed his troops in a small village. One day, Emperor Taizong was riding a horse and hunting in the mountains. It was snowing heavily. Suddenly, he found a beautiful sika deer. Emperor Taizong drew his bow and shot an arrow. The sika deer ran away with the arrow. Later, the place where the deer lay was named Wolu Village. Emperor Taizong chased the injured sika deer all the way. When he chased it to a ravine with only a few families, the injured deer suddenly disappeared. Emperor Taizong dismounted to look for the deer. Suddenly, the God of Longevity appeared in the sky and said, "Li Shimin, don't hurt my mount. I will ensure that you will win the Eastern Expedition." Emperor Taizong hurriedly bowed and said, "The little king is confused. I will never dare to act rashly in Penglai Fairyland again." Later, Emperor Taizong won the Eastern Expedition, and the village was named Milugou. The legend of Penglai has a wide range of participants and a wide audience. For thousands of years, it has been based on the long-standing fairy culture, full of magnificent and magical colors, integrated into the daily life of the people, and passed down from generation to generation.
