Yanzhou Flower Stick Dance

Shandong
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Yanzhou Flower Stick Dance, commonly known as "beating flower sticks", is named after its dance prop "flower stick". "Flower stick" is made of a one-meter-long bamboo pole with several iron shafts embedded in it. Three or four copper coins are inserted into each shaft. When dancing, it is slapped all over the body to make a rustling sound, so it is also called "Sala Ba Zi". According to legend, there were many disasters in southern Shandong in ancient times. The victims begged along the streets, feeling ashamed, so they changed their begging calls to "singing the door", and beat the "flower sticks", which developed into "flower stick dance", singing folk songs while dancing, and the songs are mostly folk songs with a strong hometown flavor. Therefore, the accompaniment music of flower stick dance is still folk song tunes such as "Eight Immortals Celebrating Birthday", "Painting Fans", and "Embroidering Lanterns". The style of flower stick dance is like the character of Yanzhou people, upright and bold, revealing roughness and boldness in sorrow and melancholy. The dance moves are smooth and graceful, with a brisk rhythm and strong jumping. The melody is sometimes gentle and delicate, and sometimes vigorous and unrestrained, fully demonstrating the stubbornness, open-mindedness and upward spirit of the people of southern Shandong in their difficult life.
