Circus is a comprehensive folk art that integrates animal domestication, performance, acrobatics and magic. It has the artistic characteristics of surprise, wonder, danger and humor. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, farmers in Haogou Township, Yongqiao District, Suzhou were popular with acrobatics and folk art performances. In the late Qing Dynasty, the performances had reached a considerable scale. In the 1920s, folk acrobats represented by Yin Qingyun, Gu Chuanbiao and Wu Qingyun took the lead in integrating animals into acrobatic performances and achieved great success. In the 1930s, animal training circuses represented by Yin Qingchuan, Li Tongren and Zheng Jirong began to appear, and Yongqiao District circus officially debuted. In 1956, Harajuku County established a state-owned animal performance troupe, and its performances have spread across dozens of large and medium-sized cities across the country. Since the 1980s, folk circus art centered on Haogou Township, Yongqiao District has developed rapidly, and many circuses have become professional circuses, with large animals such as lions, tigers, bears and elephants, and have a high level of performance.
