Anhui
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Southern Anhui woodcarving originated from printmaking. In the early days, it was just based on printmaking, and the carving was gradually deepened to enhance the sense of layering. It began to take shape in the Ming Dynasty. After the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing Dynasty, the Anhui merchants in Southern Anhui rose, and the great scholars and merchants competed for luxury. Therefore, the artistic style of woodcarving gradually became delicate and complicated. With the intervention of Chinese painters, the woodcarving in Southern Anhui became more decorative and artistic, with high artistic value. Southern Anhui woodcarving is rich in distinctive local characteristics and typical decorativeness. Craftsmen directly extracted the objects and themes they were familiar with from nature and labor life, combined ideal things with real things, gave ideal things a realistic basis, and gave real things an ideal artistic conception. The traditional hand-made flat chisel drawing method is a unique skill in Southern Anhui woodcarving, and has its unique traditional craftsmanship. It is the most critical process after the woodcarving work is formed, and it is also the most typical feature that distinguishes Southern Anhui woodcarving from other woodcarvings. The technique is more delicate and sophisticated. It can make figures, flowers and plants more lifelike, and the dragons and phoenixes flying and dancing more realistic. It is an indispensable skill for completing fine wood carvings. The unique knives and carving difficulty are difficult, and other ordinary knives and techniques cannot be replaced. This unique skill has long been said to be "passed down to sons but not daughters, and passed down to family members but not outsiders." The hand-made flat chisel wire drawing method uses a knife instead of a pen, and the skill is unique and amazing.
