🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Starwin dance is mainly spread in the Heishui River Basin in Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Because the dancers wear "armor" to sing and dance, it is commonly known as "armor dance" in Chinese. "Kasidawen" is the Heishui dialect. "Kasida" means "armor", and "wen" or "gong" means "wear". "Kasidawen" is a folk sacrificial song and dance activity before the ancient Heishui people went to war, in which the warriors prayed for victory and their relatives prayed for their safety and blessings for good luck. According to research, "Kasidawen" may have originally been a sacrificial ritual produced by the ancient Qiang tribe in the process of nomadism and hunting. Before the Tang Dynasty, due to the continuous wars in the Heishui River Basin, it gradually evolved into a war sacrificial activity held by soldiers before going to war. Now, it has become a song and dance activity in sacrificial ceremonies such as festivals, celebrations, and funerals. In different areas of Heishui County, the content and form of "Kasidawen" are slightly different. The "Kasidawen" in Zhuba Village, Zawo Township, Heishui County mainly expresses the content and form of hunting. The "Kasidawen" of Oen Village, Hongyan Township, Heishui County mainly expresses the content and related status of the war. The "Kasidawen" of Weigu Township, Heishui County mainly expresses the ritual songs and dances of men and women saying goodbye and holding funeral sacrifices for the deceased warriors. It is worth mentioning that only at the funeral ceremony of the warriors do people wear armor and dance to show their respect for the warriors. From the historical origin, "Kasidawen" has the characteristics of the integration of ancient Qiang culture and Tubo culture, especially the trapezoidal dance culture phenomenon, which has important data value for the study of Heishui ethnic history, linguistics, folklore, etc. The unique polyphonic sacrificial ritual song and dance form of "Kasidawen" is also of great reference value for the study of the cultural and artistic characteristics of the tribes in the ancient plateau canyon areas. "Kasidawen" not only has unique artistic expressions in music and dance, but also can provide important clues in folk activities and the study of anthropological genes of migratory ethnic groups. Today, the living environment of "Kasidawen" is being greatly impacted by the modern lifestyle and is in urgent need of rescue protection.
