The Pumi people's clothing is slightly different in different places due to the influence of other ethnic groups in the area, but the basic characteristics are the same. Pumi children, regardless of gender, wear a linen dress before the age of thirteen. Its shape is roughly like the Manchu cheongsam, with a right-side opening, a linen belt tied around the waist, a hat on the head, and leather shoes on the feet. Girls have long hair, braided into a small braid, tied in front, and wear beads on it, mainly red beads, with more than a thousand beads and weighing one or two pounds. There are silver buckles on the collar. Girls' hats are sewn with cloth, with a cat head shape on the top and two ears standing upright. Boys have three small braids in the front and left and right of their hair, but none in the back, so they have more braids than girls. In some areas, boys shave their heads, leaving only a small tuft of hair on the top of their heads, which is braided into a small braid. Boys like to wear a woolen hat with holes on the face and a large tassel on the top of the hat. Both boys and girls wear earrings and silver bracelets. In the past, they usually wore big earrings, but in modern times, they pierced their ears with colored threads and tied jade at the bottom. Young women all wear short jackets, which were made of linen in ancient times and cotton cloth in modern times. In the past, they liked white, but now they like white, black, red and other colors. The jacket opens on the right, with a shorter bottom, narrow sleeves and high collar. In spring, they wear jackets made of corduroy, with gold and silver edges on the collar and hem, called gold-edged clothes. This was the best clothing before liberation. Adult women all wear fur shawls, which are usually made of goat skin, sheep skin, and yak skin. Goat skin is the most expensive. Most shawls are made of pure white fur, which is beautiful and generous. Two straps are tied on the shawl and tied in front of the chest. It can keep out the cold during the day, and can be used as a cushion when sitting and a mattress when sleeping. Women in Lanping and Weixi often wear colorful shawls and wear a waist cloth with overlapping lace around their waists. Young and middle-aged Pumi men wear short jackets with open collars and silver buttons, and wide-legged trousers. Most of them prefer black, and a few prefer blue. They wear a long gown and a belt on the outside. They like to make belts with white wool and embroider them on both ends. They wrap their legs with linen cloth and wear leather shoes. In spring, they wear straw shoes. Men have long hair and also wrap wigs with silk threads on their heads. This dress is consistent with the records in the literature. Some Pumi men also shave their heads and leave only a tuft of hair on the top of their heads, which is braided and coiled on the top of their heads. The hats worn by men are more exquisite and there are many styles. Some wear handkerchiefs, and some wear round felt hats. In recent decades, it has become popular to wear basin-brimmed hats, some of which are even rimmed with gold. Men's decorations include bracelets and rings. Some also wear earrings, but only pierce the left ear hole; they wear long knives and deerskin bags, which contain flints, fire mirrors, fire grass, flints and other fire-making tools. The clothes worn by elderly men and women are basically the same as those worn by adult men and women, except that most of them are black. They do not wear ornaments or wigs. Some of them also wear scarves, but they are mostly blue. The headscarf is also much longer than that of young people. They all wear plain belts and rarely wear shoes.
