🎧  Listen to Introduction

Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County is the largest settlement of Huayao Dai in China, and is known as the "Hometown of Huayao Dai in China". There are 42,000 Huayao Dai people living in Jiasa, Mosha and Shuitang Town in Xinping. They are a beautiful ethnic group nurtured by Ailao Mountain and Red River. They are named "Huayao Dai" because of their simple and elegant clothing, especially the long flower belt tied around the waist of women, which is embroidered with gorgeous and colorful exquisite patterns and hung with gorgeous and shining cherry tassels, silver bubbles and silver bells. According to the different living areas and their respective clothing characteristics, they can be divided into three branches: Dai Ya, Dai Sa and Dai Ka. The clothing of Huayao Dai is art worn on the body and history written on the body. Their clothing is composed of self-woven and self-dyed blue cloth and colorful tassels, silver bells, silver bubbles, silver bracelets, etc., which are layered and natural, achieving a perfect unity of color, shape and form. Wearing it, it is gorgeous but not vulgar, leisurely and decent. Its exquisiteness, delicacy and uniqueness are enough to be called excellent works of art, fully demonstrating the superb weaving skills and aesthetic level of the Huayao Dai. On May 24, 2021, the Dai costumes (Huayao Dai costumes) applied by Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province were approved by the State Council to be included in the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative projects.
