🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Summer Solstice Festival is a unique festival in Mohe Arctic Village. According to the customs of the Arctic Village people, on the day of the summer solstice every year, the Arctic Village people will spontaneously come to the Heilongjiang River, light a bonfire, and dance while waiting for the appearance of the northern lights. On the day of the summer solstice, the Arctic Village is the place with the longest daylight in China. The time from sunset to sunrise is only more than 3 hours. Due to the scattering of sunlight by the atmosphere and ground objects, there is basically no strict night in the few days before and after the summer solstice. Therefore, people call the Arctic Village during the summer solstice the "city that never sleeps." Generally speaking, it is an eternal natural common sense that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, but in the Arctic Village during the summer solstice, the sun rises in the north and sets in the north, and the sunset and sunrise are closely connected; they are reflected in the northern sky. This magical astronomical phenomenon of enjoying the sunset and sunrise at the same time is unique to the Arctic Village. The summer solstice is accompanied by the magical and gorgeous northern lights. In China, the Arctic Village is the place with the highest chance of seeing the northern lights. The principle of the northern lights is that the high-energy charged particles emitted by solar activity are affected by the earth's polar magnetic field and deflected to the two poles, and are excited by the molecules and atoms in the atmosphere to form a colorful, strange and spectacular color luminescence phenomenon. The Arctic Village is located on the 53rd parallel north. Due to the high latitude, there is a daylight phenomenon in summer. These factors combined make the Arctic Village the best place to observe the magical northern lights. Since Mohe is located in the northern hemisphere, people usually call the northern lights seen in Mohe the northern lights. There are many shapes of northern lights. The northern lights that have appeared in Mohe are strip-shaped, belt-shaped, umbrella-shaped, fan-shaped, sheet-shaped, gourd-shaped, shuttle-shaped, cylindrical, spherical, etc. The colors of the northern lights are red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and purple, with distinct colors. From the beginning to the disappearance, it is unpredictable, colorful, and gorgeous. Although the Northern Lights may appear all year round, they are most easily seen in the nine days before and after the summer solstice each year. Because there are often clear skies in Mohe before and after the summer solstice, when there are no clouds blocking the North Pole and Mohe, people can see the spectacular Northern Lights. Generally speaking, the Aurora is usually observed on the nights before and after the summer solstice each year. Even if the Aurora appears during the day, it is not easy to see the Aurora because the sunlight is bright and the Aurora is dim. In Mohe Arctic Village, because it is located on a high latitude line, the phenomenon of white nights will occur around the summer solstice each year, and the appearance of white nights provides favorable conditions for watching the Aurora. Since the Aurora usually appears during the summer solstice, and its forms are varied, the colors are magical and strange, and it is rare to see its true appearance, people flock to it to see the Aurora. Once they see it, they are extremely excited, which also casts a lot of mystery on the summer solstice.
