Fish skin making skills of the Hezhe people

Heilongjiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Fish skin products are made from the skin of cold-water fish in the north. The skin of cold-water fish has a certain thickness and toughness, is relatively wear-resistant, and is easy to use in production and life. Fish skin culture is a characteristic culture existing in areas above 45 degrees north latitude. Although many ethnic groups have had fish skin culture in history, only the Hezhe people in Jiejinkou Township, Tongjiang City, Heilongjiang Province have inherited it since the Qing Dynasty. The Hezhe people have long made a living by fishing and hunting. They catch fish, eat fish, use fish skin to build houses, build boats, and make clothes. They are known as the "Fish Skin Tribe" in history. The traditional fish skin craft includes a whole set of complex processing processes, which are divided into steps such as peeling, drying, softening, splicing and sewing, and artistic decoration. In the past, Hezhe women were proficient in this craft. After the mid-20th century, fish skin products were replaced by other products, and this traditional craft gradually disappeared. Due to the needs of museum collections and anthropological cultural research, the older generation of Hezhe people in Jiejinkou Hezhe Township, Tongjiang City have repeatedly reproduced fish skin clothing for domestic and foreign museums, so that this craft has been passed down in local areas. Old artists also used traditional skills to create fish skin shaman costumes and Hezhe customs series works. Some young people have developed innovations and used traditional fish skin clipping techniques to create modern fish skin crafts and fish skin paintings, extending the ancient fish skin culture to tourism, art and other fields. At present, most of the old people who mastered the traditional fish skin skills have passed away. Only Elder You Cuiyu is still alive, and she is nearly 80 years old. As the ancient Hezhe fish skin making skills are on the verge of extinction, they need to be rescued and protected urgently. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
