🎧  Listen to Introduction

Zen food is the product of the combination of Chinese vegetarian culture and foreign culture. The Chinese vegetarian tradition has a long history and originated in the pre-Qin period. The direct source of Zen food can be traced back to the dietary proposition of Emperor Wu of Liang 1,500 years ago. It integrates the ideas of Chinese medicine health preservation, Taoist nature cultivation, and Buddhist Zen joy. It is based on pure vegetarian ingredients without eggs and milk, with handmade production as the basic concept, selecting natural ingredients, without chemical additives, and refreshing and non-greasy as the basic taste. It is suitable for Buddhist Zen practitioners as a conditioning food to improve the spiritual level, and it is also suitable for the general public as a green food for healthy diet and environmental protection. Longhua Temple has always advocated "living Zen". The Longhua Zen food making technique was formed in the space of Longhua Temple on the basis of "living Zen". It is based on the Zen meditation ideas of the monks in Longhua Temple, with famous vegetarian production techniques as the main body of production, and is a skill jointly created, recognized and inherited by believers and vegetarians. The early Longhua Zen food was mainly vegetarian noodles and Buddhist tea, which was used by the monks in the temple to assist Zen meditation. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with the rise of the Longhua Temple Fair, Longhua Zen food became popular among the public, with Longhua vegetarian noodles and Longhua dried tofu as the representative ones. Today, Longhua Zen food has become a special food in Shanghai, especially its representative Longhua Luohan vegetarian noodles and Chinese dim sum, which have accompanied the growth of several generations of Shanghai people and formed a collective memory. Its unique living Zen production process, endless inheritance of human connections, dynamic and diverse folk customs, and the radiation energy of civilization inheritance beyond time and space have become a highlight of the intangible cultural heritage of skills.
