Yanchuan Storytelling

Shaanxi
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Storytelling is an ancient folk art deeply loved by the masses. In the past, almost all storytellers in this county were blind. They went from village to village, holding a three-stringed instrument or a pipa, with a swinging board tied to their legs. They played, sang and told stories to the audience, whether many or few. Storytelling is a kind of rap art, with singing accounting for a large proportion. Artists often say: "Stories are bones and singing is flesh." The content includes ancient myths, historical legends, stories of the people, news, anecdotes, etc. Storytellers can tell them vividly, ridicule and lash out at those who are evil, evil and ugly, and praise and sing the truth, goodness and beauty. When there are few people, the storytelling venue is set up on the kang or on the ground in the cave, and when there are many people, it is set up in the yard. With the passage of time and the participation of non-disabled people, the form of storytelling has also changed from one person singing to two people singing, and instruments such as erhu and banhu have been added. At present, storytelling can be divided into three types: single-person storytelling, double-person storytelling and multi-person storytelling. There is also a saying that the tunes are divided into nine tunes and ten tunes, with flat tunes and multi-person singing as the main tunes, supplemented by happy tunes, bitter tunes and other tunes. Most storytellers in this county work in the quyi propaganda team and troupe, and are engaged in performance activities after training or self-study. Representative storytellers include Bai Zhiliang, Kang Mingyi, Hao Neng, Fan Shikai, Cao Boyan and Zhen Sanmei and his wife. Representative works include "Flowers and Willows", "Money-Shaking", "Watching Lanterns", "Bronze", "Four Women Descending to Earth", etc. Yanchuan Cao Boyan is a national first-class actor. In February 1996, when he performed the storytelling "Half Bowl of Noodles" for the central leaders, Premier Li Peng was moved to tears. In January 2006, he performed a storytelling for General Secretary Hu Jintao, who shook hands with him three times. In 2006, Yanchuan storytelling "Talking about the New Village on the Road" participated in the first Yan'an Farmers' Art Festival and won the first prize for excellent programs, and Gao Yonghou won the first prize for individual performance.
