🎧  Listen to Introduction

Rattan weaving refers to weaving handicrafts and practical items made from the skin and core of rattan plant stems. It is mainly distributed in Huangbaidu Village, Fengshan Street (formerly Xiangkou Town), Wulong District, and Beiya, Shichuang and other places in Yangjiao. The old forests on both sides of the Huangbaidu Stream in Fengshan Street (formerly Xiangkou Town), Wulong District, are rich in green rattan. Its skin is bright in color, smooth in touch, and has excellent elasticity. It looks like rattan but is not rattan, so it is called rattan strips, which is a good natural weaving material. Rattan weaving generally goes through more than a dozen processes such as beating rattan (shaving off the knots on the rattan), picking rattan, washing rattan, drying rattan, bending rattan, pulling rattan (planing rattan), cutting rattan, bleaching, dyeing, weaving, and painting. It is mainly made of rattan branches, rattan cores or bamboo as the skeleton, and then woven with rattan skin or young rattan core, giving full play to the characteristics of rattan being soft and not easy to break. In terms of color, most of them use the light yellow color of the original rattan, or process and bleach it into white and ivory, and some are matched with coffee color, brown, etc. The woven rattan chairs, rattan boxes and other daily utensils are exquisitely crafted, diverse in variety, and durable, and have long been loved by consumers. Liu Zhongxue, born in 1948, is an outstanding representative of rattan weaving skills. After decades of exploration, he invented chain chairs, round chairs, back chairs, reclining chairs, iron frame chairs, etc. in different shapes, and also developed various decorative patterns. His rattan weaving skills have been recognized and praised by people. There is an endless stream of people who come to order rattan chairs and interview him. His products are sold to Chengdu, Chongqing and surrounding areas. In 2019, it was included in the sixth batch of representative projects of Chongqing's intangible cultural heritage.
