Houping Folk Songs
Houping folk songs have been popular since the late Ming Dynasty, and have been passed down to the present day through the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the Republic of China. They have a history of hundreds of years. Houping Township has high mountains and deep valleys, steep slopes, inconvenient transportation, and poor information. The Tujia people living here live in very poor conditions. They have to go uphill and down ditches when they go out, and their production and labor are extremely difficult. However, since ancient times, they have developed the excellent qualities of hard work and courage, and are not afraid of hardships and difficulties. They dare to fight against the harsh natural environment. In order to express their yearning for a better life, they often express their rich emotions in the form of singing folk songs, and express their love for their hometown, life, labor, and the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty in the world. The content of life songs is very rich. In addition to singing good songs at weddings and funerals of neighbors, young men and women should sing more when they talk about love, so that the feelings of looking forward to spring, trying spring, clever love, funny, affection, bitterness, lovesickness, and struggle can be expressed vividly. In order to eliminate fatigue, unify the pace of cooperation and stimulate emotions during production labor, people also compose and sing many labor folk songs by themselves. Hunting songs, stone-lifting songs, and weeding songs are prominent representatives. "Hearing the sound of weeding gongs and drums, singing and laughing fill the fields, singing folk songs with full energy, we have to weed several slopes a day" is a true portrayal of using folk songs to stimulate labor enthusiasm. In 2011, it was included in the third batch of Chongqing Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Projects List. The main characteristics of Houping folk songs are: steady and deep tone, strong jumping; rich lyrics and diverse forms of expression; with distinct local characteristics, rich life atmosphere and local flavor. The types are mainly divided into labor songs, life songs, love songs, ritual songs, and current affairs songs.
