Guzang Festival of the Miao Nationality
The Miao people living in Rongjiang County, which is surrounded by mountains, have created many traditional festivals in their long-term social life. These traditional festivals are quite unique and there are many of them, but the most grand, simple and unique one is the Miao "Guzang Festival". There is also a magical legend about the Miao Guzang Festival (some also called "ancestor worship festival", "drum worship festival", "drum society festival", etc.): a long time ago, there was a Miao couple living in "Galiang" (the Miao people call the area of Guzhou Chengguan and Chejiang in Rongjiang County "Galiang"), the man was called Guxi and the woman was called Wuou. One winter, when the village ate "Guzang" to worship the ancestors, Guxi and Wuou asked their daughter Arong and the young man Laogong in the village to dance the Lusheng dance to make people happy. Arong was a very beautiful girl, and Laogong was also the most outstanding handsome young man in the area. Therefore, when they were happily dancing the Lusheng dance, many people from all over the country came to watch and appreciate their wonderful Lusheng dance performance. After everyone was fascinated by their beautiful Lusheng dance steps, each village took the form of eating "Guzang" to worship their ancestors and organized the Lusheng dance. At the beginning, each village held the activities of eating Guzang to worship their ancestors frequently. But after eating so much, many families were soon eaten out of money. People could not eat Guzang to worship their ancestors, and they did not hold such ancestor worship activities for many years. But the old man in the underworld was not happy. So he sent a dream to everyone, saying that if you don't hold the ancestor worship activities again, we will not bless you with peace. As a result, each village had to hold the ancestor worship activities of eating Guzang again, and called the ancestor worship activities "Guzang Festival", and stipulated that it would be held every 13 years, which has been passed down to this day. Every time the Guzang Festival comes, relatives and friends from neighboring counties and villages come to participate. No matter which house the guests stay in, they are regarded as guests of the whole village and are warmly entertained. The form of eating Guzang is complicated, the scene is solemn, the scale is grand, and the atmosphere is solemn and mysterious. It is very important to select and feed the Guzang cattle. Fat and strong water buffaloes are the main sacrifices for eating Guzang, but not all water buffaloes meet the conditions. Therefore, it is very particular to select and feed good Guzang cattle, that is, to choose those cattle with wide horns, thick bodies, black hair (no mixed hair), and beautiful appearance. The price of such cattle is very high, but people are willing to spend a lot of money to buy them. The Miao people here usually eat Guzang on a "hai" day or "chen" day in October or November of the lunar calendar, and usually hold it for 7 days. The first 3 days are a big entertainment. The whole village blows the reed pipe and performs the reed pipe hall and reed pipe dance activities, which is very lively. On the fourth day, the ceremony of eating Guzang and stepping on the hall is held at Yinshi. At this time, the one walking in the front is the Guzang head wearing a flowery dress, feather skirt and a specially made white pheasant feather hat; followed by the leading Lusheng team, then the numerous Lusheng teams and the Guzang cows dressed up in fancy clothes and people carrying the clothes that the deceased loved during his lifetime; finally, there are the teams setting off firecrackers and iron cannons and participating in Guzang activities. The team goes around the Guzang Hall three times, and then the Guzang head recites the "Eating Guzang Poem" to the Guzang cows, and then goes home after reciting. When people leave the Guzang Hall, the earthen iron cannon, gunpowder guns and reed pipes sound together. In an instant, the reed pipes in the Guzang Hall are filled with sounds, and the crowds are bustling and jubilant. At 35:00 the next day, people lead the Guzang cattle to the "ancestral worship hall". The Guzang head reads the "ancestral worship words" for a while and fires three shots (bird guns). At this time, each household begins to worship their ancestors. From this day (the 4th day) until the end of the Guzang feast on the 7th day, people have wine and meat every day, and feast. In the words of the Miao people here, it is to accompany 0 to drink heartily, to be full of meat and drunk, this is the day to honor 0. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
