Velvet weaving technique
The weaving process of velvet is basically the same as that of Zhangrong, and it is also produced by hand-made old wooden machines. It uses 8 heddles, including 6 lying heddles and 2 starting heddles. The heddles are connected by a pedal rod, the foot pedal opens, and the shuttle and weft are manually thrown and beaten. At the same time, because the thickness of the two warps of the velvet and the ground are different, and the interweaving rate of the organization is different, two warp shafts must be used respectively to maintain the balance of the warp tension. Generally, the velvet warp is placed on the upper shaft and the ground warp is placed on the lower shaft. The carving process of velvet is not carried out on the machine. When the fabric is woven into a section or several meters (depending on the needs), it can be taken down and placed on the carving frame for carving, which is called cutting velvet. The carving order is: first, the fabric is placed flat on the carving frame, and the draft is traced on it according to the designed artwork, and then a hard and fast steel knife is used to carve (cut) the velvet warp on the raising rod along the pattern track. When all the patterns are carved, pull out the steel wire (pile rod) with force; if the steel wire is difficult to pull out, add a little vinegar to the steel wire in advance, and use a charcoal stove to properly bake it under the carving frame when pulling it out, so that the steel wire is easier to pull out. After the velvet is carved and the steel wire is pulled out, the surface of the fabric forms a velvet ring and a velvet flower. Although they are silk threads of the same color, because one is a velvet ring and the other is a velvet, the surface morphology is different, the refraction of light is also different, and the pattern is very clear. Since the pattern of velvet is not woven by a jacquard machine, but carved by hand, it can be changed freely. According to different uses, there are four-square continuous patterns suitable for clothing fabrics, and can also be used for single-flower patterns. There are even many patterns suitable for decoration, such as line drawing or monochrome drawings, black and white patterns, etc. Therefore, velvet fabrics can be used for high-end clothing and wall hangings, mirror frames, cushions and other decorative crafts.
