The bench dance is a folk dance of the Hei Miao (a branch of the Miao nationality) in Sayu, Longshan, Haizi, and Gotang towns in Anlong County. Whenever a family has a full-month banquet for their first child, the grandmother's family (people from outside the village) will go home the next day and they will always dance a wonderful bench dance with the host family (people in the village). The two parties dancing should be married peers of the opposite sex, with more than two pairs, the more the better. And when dancing, they bump their buttocks and step on each other's feet, which is very cheerful and enthusiastic. This traditional bench dance during the full-month banquet can only be seen in Kexiang Miao Village. Kexiang is an ancient Miao village on a high mountain. It is located at 105 degrees 03 minutes 04 seconds east longitude and 25 degrees 04 minutes 48 seconds north latitude. It belongs to Sayu Town, southeast of this town, bordering Kefa Village, Gotang Town, with an altitude of 1,434 meters. It has distinct four seasons throughout the year and a subtropical monsoon climate. There is a lack of water, the mountains are high and the roads are steep, and there is only one mountain road leading to the village. For more than 200 years, people still carry goods on horseback, and most of the houses in the village are traditional wooden fences, thatched houses and tile houses. The bench dance is called "Ka Niu Dang" in Miao language. Regarding its origin, it has been circulated among the Black Miao: It is said that a long time ago, all the men in the village joined the army to fight, leaving the elderly, women and children. Because it is located in the mountains and densely forested, wild beasts often appear. In order to be brave, the women like to gather together day and night, hitting each other with small benches to make a sound and drive away the wild beasts. Gradually, it has slowly evolved into a custom for local Miao women to use small benches to beat and dance to bless the children when they give birth to their children. In 1952, the land reform in Anlong was carried out and the Miao people were allocated land. Pan Shicheng, a brother of the Kexiang Miao, composed the music and Pan Xianlun wrote the lyrics for the song "The Miao Family Has Made a Head" as the accompaniment. Together with Pan Xianmao, the three of them choreographed the dance. In this way, the bench dance initially had certain programmatic and artistic characteristics. He also performed in Duyun, Xingyi and other places on behalf of Anlong. In 1981, Yang Zhanhui made a modification to some rigid and inflexible movements in the dance, which has been continued until now without any modification. Kexiang Black Miao is a branch of the Miao people. Its costumes, houses, living customs, music, bench dance, etc. have always retained the style of Miao culture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which has important historical value for the academic research of various disciplines in exploring the development of Miao culture. The bench dance is performed during the birth custom (full moon wine) of the Black Miao, and is accompanied by the song "The Miao Family Has Debuted" created by the ethnic group. It fully reflects the Miao people's praise for the new life, the joy and blessing for the birth of new life. Its performance form is passionate and unrestrained, representing the unique aesthetic psychology of the Black Miao, and has extremely high research value in dance, cultural anthropology, folklore, and ethnology.
