Anlong County leather paper making technique

Guizhou
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The leather paper making technique in Bapan Village, Wanfenghu Town, Anlong County is inherited and developed on the basis of ancient Chinese papermaking. The most detailed book on papermaking is "The Exploitation of the Works of Nature" by Song Yingxing in the Ming Dynasty. The record of paper materials, bamboo paper, and leather paper in the 13th chapter "Killing Green" can be said to be a summary of the highest peak of the development of traditional Chinese papermaking, and its main processes are basically consistent with those recorded in the book. Local villagers have historically made a living by leather paper making skills. For a long time, it has been passed down from generation to generation through oral transmission from their fathers. It is made by hand-scooping paper. There are 15 links and 72 processes from material selection to papermaking. The production process is completely consistent with the processes recorded in "The Exploitation of the Works of Nature" in the Ming Dynasty. The materials are exquisite and the production process is complicated. Especially in the link of "handling paper", every small action of the paper-handling master can affect the success or failure of the paper. The skilled master handles hundreds of sheets of paper in a row, and their fiber arrangement, paper thickness, wetting speed, tensile strength, etc. are completely consistent. During the heyday of the parchment paper making technique in Bapan Village, "every family had a workshop and every household made paper." It created good economic income for the local people and made great contributions to the inheritance of this ancient craft. It is also a living fossil of Cai Lun's papermaking, one of my country's "Four Great Inventions," and has both rich historical and cultural value.
