The Twenty-Four Solar Terms (Shiqian's Talk on Spring)

Guizhou
🎧  Listen to Introduction

"Shuochun" is a folk performance activity handed down from generation to generation by the Dong people in Shiqian. They dress up as "Spring Officials" to sing and persuade farmers to work hard during the Spring Beginning, wishing for good weather and abundant food and clothing. "Spring Officials" were an official in the Zhou Dynasty who was in charge of farming affairs. In later generations, storytellers dressed up as Spring Officials performed from house to house in rural areas, forming a custom of "Spring Officials Sending Spring" to persuade farmers to pray for blessings. Storytellers are also commonly known as "Spring Officials". The Shiqian Prefecture Chronicles and County Chronicles in the Qianlong Period of the Qing Dynasty have records of the local custom of saying spring. The Shiqian Dong people absorbed this custom and passed it on to this day. Saying spring usually starts at the Spring Festival or the Beginning of Spring every year and ends at the Spring Equinox. Saying spring lyrics are actually singing, with simple tunes that vary from place to place. "Shuochun" is divided into "Shuozhengchun" and "Shuoyechun". "Shuozhengchun" has fixed spring lyrics, and its content mainly talks about "24 agricultural solar terms" and "fishermen, woodcutters, farmers and readers", covering all aspects of history, geography, and humanities. "Shuo Ye Chun" is also known as "Shuo Shua Chun" and "Shuo Hua Hua Chun". It is rich in content, flexible and unconventional. The main names of the pieces include "Opening the Gate of Wealth", "Praise the Master", "Talking about Tea", "Seeing the Son and Beating the Son", etc. "Spring waiters" hold the spring ox in their hands. Whenever they visit the house of the Spring Talker, they will distribute a lunar calendar and a spring sticker of the God of Wealth, which is intended to persuade farmers to plough in the spring and wish the owner good luck. This project is a precious relic of the traditional folk rituals of my country's long-standing agricultural civilization. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
