Lion dance, also known as "lion dance", "lion lantern", "lion dance" and "lion dance", is an important part of traditional Chinese acrobatics. Lion dance has a long history. It is popular in the Han Chinese areas of China and frequently appears in festivals and celebrations such as the Spring Festival. Through lively and cheerful performances, it expresses the Chinese people's good wishes for good luck and the elimination of disasters. The lion dance forms vary from place to place in China, with distinct regional characteristics. It is generally divided into two categories: southern lion and northern lion. The southern lion is agile and fierce, and often performs difficult skills; the northern lion is cute and adorable, and often performs playful performances. The Waga Buyi high-platform lion lantern dance is a folk dance circulated in Waga Village, Maling Town, Xingyi City, Guizhou Province. It was introduced into the Panjiang River Basin during the Eastern Han Dynasty and gradually became popular after the Three Kingdoms and the Southern and Northern Dynasties. In the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, lion dance activities were widely spread among the Buyi people in this area. When performing the Bouyei high-platform lion lantern dance, six or eight eight-tables are stacked into a high platform. The top table is turned over with four legs facing up, and the lion spins up, sometimes turning, sometimes jumping, and performing thrilling movements such as flipping, rolling, and stacking in the process. After reaching the top, the lion dances in the air on the four table legs. When encountering such aerial performances, the lion lantern artists of Waga will use the difficult "jumping foot" technique to jump over quickly and accurately, showing superb skills. The percussion instruments of the high-platform lion lantern are called "sounding instruments", which are composed of horse gongs, bowls, hall gongs, drums, etc. There are hundreds of ways to play them, which are novel and unique, and have great changes. The Bouyei high-platform lion lantern dance of the Waga Bouyei people is active in the traditional festivals and weddings and funerals of the Bouyei people, and is an important part of the Bouyei traditional culture. It vividly shows the production conditions, living customs, religious beliefs and ideal pursuits of the Bouyei people, and has played a positive role in enhancing national cohesion and promoting excellent national culture. In recent years, the high-platform lion lantern dance has faced a survival crisis, and it is urgent to formulate effective protection measures for rescue and protection.
