The custom of eating new food and worshipping ancestors is an important festival of the Gelao people in Pingzheng, Zunyi County. It is mainly spread in Pingzheng Gelao Township, Zunyi County and other Gelao-inhabited areas in Guizhou Province. The custom of eating new food and worshipping ancestors in Pingzheng Gelao Township, Zunyi County is relatively complete and rich. Pingzheng Gelao Township is located in the western part of Zunyi County, 65 kilometers away from the historical and cultural city of Zunyi. The landform of the township is based on the branches extending from north to south of the Dalou Mountain Range, and is naturally combined with canyons, ancient valleys, basins, etc. to form karst lava landforms of different heights and shapes. The main rivers include Panshui River and Heijiaoyan River, all of which originate from the Dalou Mountains in the west and flow into Guanyinsi River in the east. The custom of eating new food and worshipping ancestors in Pingzheng Gelao people is to worship the Bamboo King every time they carry out the eating new food and worshipping activities. They believe that they are descendants of the Bamboo King of Yelang State. Whether in production or in daily life, they have a special feeling and origin relationship with bamboo. The Gelao people's "eating new food to worship ancestors" is different from the eating new food to worship ancestors of other ethnic groups in Guizhou. Other ethnic groups can only pick grains from their own fields and absolutely cannot pick grains from other people's fields. However, the Gelao people pick new food (grain) to offer to their ancestors regardless of boundaries or ethnicity. They can pick grains and beans from dozens of miles or even nearly a hundred miles nearby to offer to their ancestors. They are not criticized and are regarded as auspicious. The owner is very satisfied. With the evolution and changes of social history, its activities and rituals have also integrated the characteristics of the times. For example, the first Caitang dance could only be performed in the main hall when the Gelao elderly died. Now, the Gelao Caitang dance has also been used in various entertainment activities and welcoming and seeing off guests. The Gelao people usually eat new food to worship their ancestors in the seventh or eighth month of the lunar calendar every year. As soon as the grains are ripe, they can eat new food to worship their ancestors. In the early morning, all the men and women in the village gathered under the ancient tree in the village in their best clothes and listened to the village elders' arrangements for the festival. Young men and women gather at the entrance of the village, use earth cannons and singing to welcome guests, and offer wine to the gate. Young men and women go to the fields to pick ears of grain, corn, melons and fruits. The girls, who have been carefully dressed, go to the fields to pick new grains. Before picking new grains, they sing the song of sickle. When picking new grains, they sing the song of picking new grains while picking them. They must first pick the first ripe grains (commonly known as the lookout grains). They are especially welcome to pick them in fields outside their own ethnic group. Each family uses the newly ripened crops to worship their ancestors, the bamboo king, the sacred tree, and the grain god. Wine, ears of grain, corn, eggplant, melon, beans, and glutinous rice cakes are displayed on the square table. Paper candles are lit, and the ancestors are asked to taste the new crops, bless the family with good luck and peace, and have a good harvest and prosperous livestock in the coming year. Afterwards, men, women, old and young gather under the ancient tree to worship their ancestors according to seniority with the newly picked grains, the hairless ancestral pig, 9 skewers of meat, and 24 bowls of wine and rice. After the sacrifice, earth cannons and firecrackers are set off, Yang opera (or Nuo opera) is performed, martial arts are performed, bamboo eggs are played, and men and women sing songs to find their loved ones. The village elders collect the meat skewers, wine and bowls in the sieve, slaughter a chicken, go to the village entrance, and stick bamboo poles with red peppers and green garlic in the field, and send chicken, meat and wine to the ancestors. Afterwards, all the men, women, old and young in the village gather at a certain place to sing folk songs, dance the Caitang dance, polish Moqiu, play bamboo eggs, etc. The representative Bufu (Taoist priests who preside over the sacrifice) in Pingzheng Gelao Township now include: Xiong Wenbang, Xiong Wenfu, Xiong Dezhai, Xiong Guozhang, Xiong Guozhang, Xiong Yongkun, etc. from the Shibanshang group of Gongxin Village, Pingzheng Gelao Township, and Wu Sanhuai, Wu Fuliang, Wu Guoqi, Wu Degui, Wu Qiuyun, Wu Anming, Wu Mingqiang, etc. from the Dafang group of Gongxin Village, Pingzheng Gelao Township. The activity of eating new food and worshipping ancestors is the grandest activity of the Gelao people. The sacrificial activities are generally carried out in villages. In this grand festival, cattle are slaughtered to worship the sky, horses are slaughtered to worship the earth, pigs are slaughtered to worship ancestors, and the barbarian king, bamboo king, Yelang king, and generations of ancestors are worshipped. At the same time, a variety of cultural and sports competitions are held, such as playing with eggs, grinding autumn, singing, dancing Lusheng and stepping on the hall, etc. It reflects the national identity of the Gelao people. Its significance lies in commemorating the ancestors who opened up wasteland and grass, celebrating the harvest, and expressing joy. After the implementation of collectivization in the 1950s, the land was returned to the collective, and the members received remuneration according to work points. The activity of eating new food and worshipping ancestors was interrupted by policy restrictions. In the 1980s, with the implementation of the contract responsibility system for linking remuneration to output, the custom of eating new food and worshipping ancestors was gradually restored in various places. However, due to the interruption of several decades, many details of the activities of eating new food and worshipping ancestors have been lost. Only some elderly people can pass on the tradition orally from memory. In addition, fewer and fewer people can speak the Gelao language. Now the value orientation of the young generation has changed, and they are pursuing fashion. The enthusiasm for inheriting the ancient culture of the ethnic group is also disappearing. As time goes by, there are only a few old artists who are familiar with the various processes of eating new food and worshipping ancestors. The Gelao custom of eating new food and worshipping ancestors is now facing a crisis of inheritance. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
