🎧  Listen to Introduction

Going to the seedling field is a traditional custom of the Miao people in Xingmin Town, Xishui County. Xingmin Town is located in the southern part of Xishui County, bordering Tongmin Town and Taipingdu Town, Gulin County, Sichuan Province, and across the river from Longxing Town. The highest altitude is 866 meters and the lowest altitude is 291 meters. The terrain is a typical hilly landform. The town is mainly engaged in planting and breeding, and is a typical agricultural town. The soil in the territory is purple soil, producing common crops such as rice, corn, wheat, potatoes, beans, and rapeseed. According to the old man in Xingmin Town, at the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, some Miao people helped the Feng family in Jiangxi to lead horses to Xingmin. The host surnamed Feng was hospitable and kept them, and allocated Qingliang Mountain to Qinglonggang to the ancestors of the Miao people. The Miao people made a living by hunting, and later moved to Mawotou to live and buried their graves on the mountain. One year, the bandit leader Dao Dapang robbed the Miao people and killed the Miao grandmother Xiong. The Miao leader Li Ershun led the tribe and hundreds of Miao people from Xiong's Sichuan natal family to besiege and arrest Dao Dapang with weapons, and executed Dao Dapang on the third day of the first lunar month in Zhashanbao (now Longping Group 4). After that, after discussion by the Miao leaders, this day was set as a festival for the Miao people to meet relatives, talk about relatives, visit friends, and intermarry. Later, because Zhashanbao (now Longping Group 4) was small, after further discussion, Zhashanbao was moved to the current Zhashanba, and a post station, food store, and tobacco house were set up in Zhashanba to facilitate pedestrian accommodation activities. Due to historical reasons of ethnic oppression and ethnic discrimination, the intermarriage relationship of the Miao people has always been carried out within the ethnic group, which has affected the free communication of unmarried Miao youth in choosing spouses. Under such circumstances, the blind date in the Miao field of Zhashanba came into being. The significance of the Miao field is very unique. Xingmin Town is located on the border of Sichuan and Guizhou, and the villagers who have lived in the two provinces for generations have frequent exchanges. With the efforts of several generations of Miao clan leaders such as Li Ershun, Li Delin, Li Sanhe, Zhang Yinhai, and Li Shaowen, today's Zhashanba is on the third day of the first lunar month on the day of the Mountain Stepping Festival, where ethnic minorities sing and dance, play reed pipes, sing folk songs, dance Miao dances, eat Miao cakes, etc. Ethnic minority youths will also talk about love, sing and date at this time, and Han parents will take their children to find Miao girls as godmothers for good luck and peace. The Miao field is very lively. The Miao field is a place of intersection for the common development and prosperity of the Miao and Han people in Xingmin Town. It is a production and cultural space formed by the Miao and people of all ethnic groups under the specific environment of the long-term agricultural social production mode. It carries the rich historical and cultural information of Xingmin Town and the memory of the inheritance of the original group. And it is inherited through the economic and cultural forms of the Miao field, which has become an important reason for the vigorous development of the traditional culture of Xingmin Town. In recent years, due to the influence of the economy and Han culture, the enthusiasm of the people to participate has been rising year by year, but the local culture of the Miao people has been gradually assimilated in the Miao market. The activities of the Miao market have gradually evolved into a purely commercial economic trade. The Miao-style clothing and production and living supplies have gradually disappeared.
