Dongshan Shipbuilding Technology

🎧  Listen to Introduction

Archaeological excavations at the shell mound site of Da Mao Shan on Dongshan Island show that at least 5,000 years ago, the ancestors of Dongshan Island had already made and used boats. The Ming and Qing Dynasties were the heyday of Dongshan's shipbuilding industry. Dongshan shipbuilding, commonly known as "nailing ships", refers to a traditional handcraft of building wooden sea ships on Dongshan Island in Fujian. In the long history of shipbuilding development, shipbuilders have summarized and accumulated a set of unique construction rules, such as ship type, keel and length, length and width, length and mast height, and have passed them down from generation to generation. Relying on this set of construction methods, shipbuilders can build various wooden sea ships without any design drawings. The main procedures of Dongshan shipbuilding: installing shovels (placing keels), installing dragon pillars (head pillars), eight characters (sterns) and dog bones (ribs), releasing gates (dividing and repairing sealed cabin bulkheads), sealing the hull, installing ship beams, laying Guanzai boards (decks), building ship buildings, installing tail metal and rudders, erecting masts, setting sails, installing dragon eyes (eyes of the ship), filling putty (caulking seams), etc. Dongshan traditional shipbuilding does not use modern machinery but mainly relies on traditional tools, including axes, saws, chisels, adzes, planers, drills, hammers, wooden hammers, nail pullers, ink fountains, bevels, levels, ash handles, etc. The traditional wooden sea ships built by Dongshan Shipyard mainly include three categories: transport ships, fishing boats and warships. Transport ships or merchant ships are relatively large, represented by the "Northern Ships" and "Salt Boats" of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. These ships once sailed to domestic and foreign ports and engaged in domestic and foreign trade; fishing boats include "Daqiao" and "Sampans"; warships include various large and small sentry boats, patrol boats, and silk boats. These sea ships have high wind and wave resistance and good stability, which are very suitable for the sea conditions in Dongshan waters and even the Taiwan Strait. Dongshan shipbuilding skills have been passed down from generation to generation. Although there has never been a systematic summary and written materials, they are remembered by the inheritors. They are technical materials accumulated through long-term practice and are very precious. Dongshan's traditional shipbuilding skills are of great value for restoring ancient ships and studying the history of ancient science and technology, shipbuilding history, navigation history, and overseas trade history.
