Fuding Marionette Show is a kind of traditional drama in Fujian and Zhejiang that uses puppets to perform historical stories and traditional epics. It originated in the late Song Dynasty and became popular in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is called "Seven Lines" by the people. It is mainly distributed in Bailin, Guanling and other towns in Fuding. The performance places cover the villages of various towns in the local area and the eastern Fujian and southern Zhejiang regions. It is often performed during traditional festivals, folk festivals, temple fairs, sacrifices and other activities. Fuding Marionette Show is exquisitely made, with complete figures and lifelike performances. Its body length is mostly between 90 and 110 cm. The puppet wears a golden crown, a five-color dragon and phoenix robe, and various royal boots, cloud-head boots, high boots, cloth-soled shoes, flower shoes, etc. The traditional puppet marionette is about 160 cm long. The artist stands behind the scenes to perform the marionette. Now it is performed on the stage bridge, with the effect of a stage in the middle. The marionette is up to 300 cm long, and the performance is more vivid. Artists play the roles of Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo and Chou according to different scripts. The performances cover the stories of emperors, generals, talented scholars and beautiful women, and common people in the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties. The main categories include mythological dramas, martial arts dramas, literary dramas, trial dramas, and birthday dramas. Puppet artists have created many stunts in their long stage careers, such as flying knives, playing flowers, rowing, lifting bridges, picking up coins, breathing fire, beheading, disembowelment, stripping, and changing faces. Puppet artists are versatile and have the basic skills of blowing, pulling, playing, and singing. They mainly perform rap and dialogue. The content of the drama is introduced by the character "Ma Gu Chang" in the play, who analyzes and narrates the plot from time to time and speaks humorously to increase the interest of the audience. The Fuding dialect used by puppeteers in their performances is mainly a combination of Tongshan dialect, Minnan dialect, Zhenan dialect and She dialect, with ancient pronunciations and vocabulary, reflecting the antiquity and diversity of the ancient traditional drama genres formed by Fuding's special geographical location at the junction of Fujian and Zhejiang and the northeastern wing of Haixi. At the same time, Fuding puppetry preserves a large number of folk weddings, funerals, folk beliefs and customs in the ancient Fujian-Zhejiang border area, and is a precious historical heritage.
