Shanghang bamboo carving (bamboo engraving) has a long history. According to historical records, as early as the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (1736 to 1795), Shanghang's bamboo carving products such as bamboo locks and bamboo yellows were already famous all over the world. In the 16th year of Qianlong, bamboo locks were presented to the court as local tribute. In the 19th year of Qianlong, when the Jinshi Ji Xiaolan, the admiral of Fujian education, visited Tingzhou, he saw the Shanghang bamboo spring product "box" and wrote a poem in praise. Later, due to its complex craftsmanship, there were few scholars and it was lost. In 1972, after the establishment of Shanghang County Arts and Crafts Factory, it produced a batch of bamboo carvings and bamboo weaving products for Gutian Memorial Hall as souvenirs for sale, and also sold them to more than 80 countries and regions including Europe, America, Japan, and Southeast Asia. The craftsmanship of bamboo carving is exquisite. First, bamboo that has grown for more than five years must be selected. After cutting, it is treated with "66" powder and boiled in water to prevent moths. Then the designed pattern is pasted on the bamboo tube, and it is carefully carved according to the picture. After polishing, coloring, painting, waxing and other processes, it becomes an antique bamboo carving artwork (mostly bronze). There are many varieties of bamboo carving handicrafts, mainly pen holders, figures, landscapes and other carvings. There are also bamboo locks. Bamboo yellow is also an important part of bamboo carving, also known as stick spring, reverse spring, and asparagus. The method of making is to turn the "yellow" of the inner layer of the bamboo tube over, and make various utensils through boiling, pressing, pasting, and carving. The craftsmanship is exquisite and beautiful. It has high ornamental and artistic value and is favored by collectors.
