Lisu "Spring Bathing Festival"

Yunnan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Whenever spring comes, the Lisu people living in the Nujiang Gorge in Yunnan go to hot springs to bathe. It is said that this has a history of more than 100 years. In the first month of the lunar calendar, when people go to take a "spring bath", they all wear festive costumes. The boys and girls are even more beautifully dressed. They bring dry food and dishes early in the morning, carry their luggage, and go to the wild for food and accommodation. They regard "spring bathing" as a civilized, hygienic and holy behavior. Therefore, even the elderly who have lived in the village for a long time, regardless of their old age and frailty, and the rugged road, let their children and grandchildren help them go. People who take a bath are very civilized and polite, and men and women respect each other. Usually the elders bathe first, and the young people bathe later. When the men take a bath, the women make an appointment to prepare meals; when the women take a bath, the boys carry their backpacks and go into the deep mountains and dense forests to collect firewood and hunt. People who participate in the "spring bath" usually set up bamboo sheds or find caves to rest about half a mile away from the hot springs. They stay in the hot springs for three to five days, bathing seven to eight times a day. It is said that after such repeated bathing, diseases can be eliminated, health can be improved, and full energy can be devoted to the labor production in the new year. Every Spring Festival, Lisu men, women, old and young gather in Lushui Shiliutang Hot Springs to bathe. The eternally holy hot spring water washes away filth and welcomes good luck. Here, people sing songs all night long, and young people make friends and commit to life together. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
