The Miao reunion drum dance is popular in the traditional ethnic dance of Hepeng Township, Guzhang County. It originated before the Han Dynasty and originated from the ancient sacrificial activities of the Miao people. According to the "Guzhang Pingting Chronicle National Volume", "A long wood is hollowed out, and the end of the skin is made into a drum. The beautiful women are asked to jump and beat it, and men and women who are good at singing are selected. They are all dressed in colorful clothes of actors, or covered with red felt, wearing folded corner scarves, and cut two pieces of five-colored paper and coiled on their backs. Men and women sing around and sing in harmony, raising their hands and stamping their feet. It is called jumping drums." This is a sacrificial song and dance activity. With the changes of the times, the reunion drum dance was separated from the sacrifice and became a song and dance performance style that the Miao people love to see. At the beginning of the founding of New China, the Guzhang County Cultural Center began to organize the reunion drum dance, and participated in the state and provincial ethnic folk song and dance performances, and won awards. In the 1980s, the compilation of folk dance collections was carried out nationwide. After further exploration and sorting by experts, the reunion drum dance was selected and included in the "Hunan Province Ethnic Folk Dance Collection Autonomous Prefecture Volume". According to the "Collection of Folk Tales of Guzhang", on the 28th day of the twelfth lunar month, the Miao people, no matter how long they have been working outside or how far they are from home, must rush back home to celebrate the New Year. That night, everyone gathered at the big square at the entrance of the village. A big drum was placed in the middle of the field. An old man of high moral character beat the drum frequently. Everyone formed two circles, men inside and women outside, dancing and singing moving Miao songs from time to time, expressing the joy of family reunion. The drum beats were sonorous, the dance was graceful, and the Miao songs were leisurely, which was a happy scene of reunion and New Year. The reunion drum dance will not end until the 15th day of the first lunar month. There are three types of reunion drum dance movements: big swing, small swing, and fine swing, and the other two have been lost. The big swing is rough, the small swing is steady, and the fine swing is innocent, which expresses the Miao people's love for life and their wish for a good year. The Miao reunion drum dance is of great value to the study of Miao history, culture, customs, migration, etc. The Miao ethnic group's reunion drum dance is popular in a relatively small area, and many young people go out to work, so there is a lack of people to participate in the performance. Many old artists are old, and some have passed away one after another. With the death of the people, the art has died. There are only a few people who can dance the reunion drum dance, and there is a lack of successors. It is in urgent need of rescue. In order to protect the ethnic and folk intangible cultural heritage, the State People's Congress has formulated the "Regulations on the Protection of Ethnic and Folk Cultural Heritage in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture". Guzhang County has established an intangible cultural heritage protection leading group and a protection project expert committee, and allocated special funds for a comprehensive survey and sorting work to protect the old folk artists and cultivate art inheritors, so that the Miao ethnic group's reunion drum dance will continue to flourish.
