Naxi Baishaxi Music
Naxi Baishaxi music is also known as "Bengshixili", "Bieshixili" and "Bieshixieli". It is spread in the Old Town District of Lijiang City and Yulong Naxi Autonomous County. According to the Tang Dynasty's "Manshu", the ancestors of the Naxi people "loved to drink, sing and dance". Baishaxi music is one of the most representative works of the Naxi people. It is a classical music suite that combines instrumental music, vocal music and dance created by the Naxi ancestors. In terms of its historical origin, one theory is that "the sound left by the Yuan family is so sad and moving. It is said that it was given by the ancestor before leaving, so it was named Bieshixieli"; the other theory is that it was created from the music of the Naxi people to commemorate the dead in the war. There are different opinions, and no definite research is available for the time being. According to the well-documented inheritance genealogy of the deceased famous old Naxi artists and Xidian, this music was popular in Lijiang at least 200 years ago, expressing the feelings of separation and nostalgia. According to legend, Baishaxi music has 10 tunes, and 8 of them are still in existence, namely "Du", "A Letter", "Thinking Three Times", "Beautiful White Clouds", "The Princess Crying", "Ducuo", "Southern Tune" and "Northern Tune". Barefoot dance "Ducuo", lark dance "Laomacuo", bow and arrow dance "Kangcuo", white crane dance "Kuacuo" and so on are played and danced during funerals. "Ducuo", "Laomacuo", "Kangcuo" and "Kuacuo" are all Naxi words, which are signs that dances are native to the folk. From the separation of life and death, they can also prove the Naxi historical facts such as the soul-sending route. The musical instruments include transverse flute, recorder, reed pipe, Sugudu, small-sounding pipa, guzheng, erhuang, huqin, etc. There must be at least 8 people to play, and the performance is mainly ensemble, accompanied by singing and dancing. Sugudu and reed pipes are similar to the Yuan Dynasty banquet instruments "Huobusi" and "Bobo". Baishaxi music combines the Yuan and Ming dynasty music with Naxi folk music. It is a set of music that took a long time to gradually form. It has a unique conception, instrumental music, singing and dancing, a profound artistic conception, lyrical tunes, and gentle and smooth melodies. After the founding of New China, Baishaxi music has received attention and high attention from cultural and academic departments at all levels and Chinese and foreign music experts and scholars. Since the 1960s, a group of well-known domestic scholars have come to Lijiang for investigation and research, and have made many useful explorations on the protection, inheritance and promotion of Baishaxi music, and have given it high praise. At present, there are fewer and fewer descendants who can play Baishaxi music in Lijiang. Lijiang governments at all levels and relevant departments have done a lot of effective work to promote Baishaxi music, and have tried their best to protect and rescue this cultural wonder in the impact of modern civilization.
