🎧  Listen to Introduction

Zhijiang was called Yuanzhou in ancient times. Yuanzhou stone carvings are named after the Yuanzhou stone. The stones produced in Yuanzhou are rich in color and gorgeous. The "Xiaoxiang Tingyu Lu" written by Ling Jiangyu in the Qing Dynasty once recorded: "Yuanzhou stone is ochre, yellow, white and five colors are stacked" and "the purple stone has patterns around it like a belt". Such colorful and rich colors are gathered in one stone, which is unique. Secondly, the stone is delicate, warm like jade, with moderate hardness and clear texture, so it is called "Dongjia beautiful jade". As early as more than 800 years ago during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Song Dynasty, it was presented to the court as a tribute stone to make carved inkstones, pen beds, seal boxes, pots, screens, steles, gardens, etc. It is said that when Empress Dowager Cixi built the world-famous Summer Palace, Yuanzhou stone was used as a tribute stone and entered the ranks of "carved railings and jade masonry". After the reform and opening up, the development of Zhijiang Yuanzhou stone carving is like taking off with wings. Yuanzhou stone carving skills are constantly improving, and the perfect combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern skills has made it shine. It has won many awards in domestic and international competitions, making Zhijiang Yuanzhou stone carving famous both at home and abroad. In 2014, the project was included in the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative works.
