Jingzhou Huagu Opera is one of the main local operas in Hubei Province. It was formerly known as Huaguzi and Tianmian Huagu Opera. It is a kind of local opera that has gradually developed since the late Ming Dynasty by absorbing the repertoires, vocal styles and performances of other operas in the folk singing forms such as Sanbanggu, stilt walking and lotus picking boat in Jianghan Plain. It is popular in various areas under the jurisdiction of the former Jingzhou, and has spread to neighboring southern Hubei and northern Hunan. According to statistics, there are 197 repertoires of Jingzhou Huagu Opera, including "Pulling the Bolt", "Pinching the Vegetable Moss", "Telling the Master", "Standing on the Flower Wall", "Double-Picking Bamboo Shoots", "Beating Lianxiang", "Jianghan Map", "Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival", "Patching the Nail", "Playing with the Toad", "Sanguan Hall", "Quitting the Store", "Yin San", "Telling the Jingcheng", etc. The early roles of Jingzhou Huagu Opera were mainly Xiaosheng, Xiaoqiao and Xiaodan. Later, with the changes in the repertoire, five roles were formed: Xiaosheng, Shengjiao, Zhengdan, Huadan and Chou. The performance is free and flexible, relaxed and lively, full of strong local sentiment and folk life atmosphere, with stunts such as "picking flowers", "carrying colors", and "biting bowls". The music of Jingzhou Huagu Opera belongs to the gong-drum system. Its singing is divided into two categories: main tune and minor tune. The main tune belongs to the board tune, including high tune, gong-drum tune, Siping tune, Qishui tune, etc. Minor tunes are divided into three categories: single-piece brand, special tune, and interlude. The music is short, the melody is beautiful, the rhythm is brisk, and the color is rich. The traditional singing form of Jingzhou Huagu Opera is "one singing and many people joining in, accompanied by gongs and drums". The singing is high-pitched and simple, the melody has a wide range, and there are many big jumps in the melody. Both men and women sing in their own voices combined with falsetto. The three elements of "singing, helping, and beating" are closely coordinated to form a unique singing style. The main accompaniment instruments include side drums, bamboo clappers, cymbals, big gongs, horse gongs, small gongs, suona, etc. There are about twenty kinds of percussion instruments.
