Huangmei Opera originated in Huangmei, Hubei Province. Its original name was Huangmei Tune, Tea Picking Opera, etc. It is now spread in Anqing City, Anhui Province, Huangmei County, Hubei Province and other places. In the late Qing Dynasty, the Tea Picking Tune in Huangmei County, Hubei Province was introduced to the neighboring Huaining County, Anhui Province and other areas. It was combined with local folk art and sung and recited in the Anqing dialect, gradually developing into a new opera genre, which was called Huaiqiang or Huaidiao at the time. This was the early Huangmei Opera. Later, Huangmei Opera borrowed and absorbed the music, performances and repertoires of Qingyangqiang and Huidiao, and began to perform "original opera". Later, with Anqing as the center, after more than a hundred years of development, Huangmei Opera became the main local opera genre in Anhui Province and a well-known opera genre in the country. The singing style of Huangmei Opera belongs to the board-style variation, with three major tune systems: flowery tune, colorful tune and main tune. Flower-tone is mainly used for small plays, and its tunes are healthy and simple, beautiful and cheerful, with a strong flavor of life and the color of folk songs; the tunes of color-tone are cheerful and have been widely used in flower-tone small plays; the main tune is the singing tune commonly used in the traditional Huangmei Opera, which is divided into Pingci, Huogong, Erxing and Sanxing. Among them, Pingci is the most important singing tune in the original play, and the tune is solemn and beautiful. Huangmei Opera is known for its lyricism, rich charm, simple and fresh singing, delicate and moving, and bright and lyrical. It has rich expressiveness, is easy to understand, and is easy to popularize, and is deeply loved by people from all over the country. In terms of musical accompaniment, the early Huangmei Opera was played by three people playing percussion instruments such as drums, cymbals, small gongs, and large gongs, and they also participated in the chorus, which was known as "three beats and seven sings". After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Huangmei Opera formally established an accompaniment system with Gaohu as the main instrument. The role system of Huangmei Opera was developed on the basis of "two small plays" and "three small plays", including Zhengdan, Zhengsheng, Xiaodan, Xiaosheng, Huadan, Qiaochou, Laodan, Laosheng, Hualian, Daomadan, Wuerhua and other roles. Although there is a division of labor, there is no strict restriction, and actors can often play other roles. Huangmei Opera's performances are full of singing and dancing, simple and meticulous, real and lively, full of life, known for advocating emotional experience, and have a fresh, natural, beautiful and smooth artistic style. There are many well-known excellent repertoires in Huangmei Opera, and the most representative ones are "The Fairy and the Fairy", "The Female Prince Consort", "The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl", "The Couple Watching Lanterns", "Picking Pig Grass", and "Spinning Cotton Yarn". Huangmei Opera is one of the five major Chinese operas, and its influence is far-reaching. At present, the popular areas of Huangmei Opera are shrinking, and the survival of Huangmei Opera troupes at all levels, especially county-level troupes, is becoming increasingly difficult, and they need the care and support of the government and the whole society.
