Tuanfeng releases river lanterns on July 15th
Tuanfeng people have the custom of releasing river lanterns on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. The 15th day of the seventh lunar month is the "Zhongyuan Festival", also known as the "Yulan Festival". Yulan, in Sanskrit, is Ulanpo, which means to save the upside-down, commonly known as the "Ghost Festival". It is similar to the Qingming Festival, and every household will worship their ancestors on this day. This custom has been passed down for a long time. By the Tang and Song dynasties, it had become a festival of folk activities. "Qian Chun Sui Shi Ji" records: "Every year on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, Taoism calls it the Zhongyuan Festival, and each has fasting and offerings; monks and temples use this day to hold Yulan Pen Fasting, and the people also use this day to worship their ancestors." Going to the graves and worshipping ancestors on the Zhongyuan Festival has become a traditional custom of the Chinese nation. Every July 15th, every household in the folk will burn paper money and place incense and candles to worship their ancestors as their travel expenses to Yangzhou to participate in the "Yulan Festival". On this night, villages along the river in Tuanfeng City have the custom of releasing river lanterns. People use paper or silk to make various small lanterns, such as boat-shaped and lotus-shaped. Lotus-shaped ones are the most common, so they are also called "lotus lanterns". The lanterns are supported by wooden boards, and candles or kerosene lamp grass are lit inside the lanterns. Then, they are put into the water and allowed to drift with the water. Often, believers from a village or a temple invite each other to float together. At this time, thousands of lights on the river surface stretch for miles, colorful and shining in the night sky. There are thousands of stars above and thousands of river lanterns below, which complement each other. The villagers of Desheng Village and Linjiangpu Village in Tuanfeng and the employees of Tuanfeng Water Plant often accompany the beating of gongs and drums, and set off fireworks and firecrackers to reflect the journey of the water god or the deceased ancestors, which is the so-called "fireworks in July in Yangzhou". At the same time, July 15th is also the day of harvest, and "lotus lanterns" contain wishes for a good harvest. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
