Qixi Festival (Yunxi Qixi Festival)
Qixi Festival (Yunxi Qixi), a traditional folk custom of Yunxi County, Hubei Province, is one of the national intangible cultural heritages. The Qixi culture of Yunxi is based on the legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, with loyal love as the main line, begging for skills and blessings as the representation, physical relics as the carrier, and Yunxi Tianhe as the symbol. It encompasses local traditional culture with rich contents such as stories and legends, physical relics, and Qixi folk customs. The Qixi culture of Yunxi is unique and has its own system. It has a long history and is profound. According to historical records, Yunxi is "the place where the immortals are handed down from generation to generation." Yunxi is not only called "Tianhe" in real name, but also "Yinhe". There is a river called Yinhe to the west of Hejia Town. This river is parallel to the "Tianhe", flows vertically south, enters Guixian River and flows into Hanshui. Yunxi also has Cowherd Mountain and Weaver Girl Mountain. According to local legend, when the Cowherd chased the Weaver Girl, he was fixed there by the Queen Mother, and has since turned into two peaks, standing on both sides of the Milky Way. As one of the birthplaces of ancient humans, civilization has flourished and spread in this land for thousands of years. Local cultural customs and folk legends have provided Yunxi with unique cultural elements for the formation, enrichment and perfection of the story of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl on the Qixi Festival. "Inviting the Seventh Sister" is the main ritual of the Qixi Festival in Yunxi. Through the three links of "inviting", "asking" and "sending", the goddess represented by the Weaver Girl is invited to the mortal world to ask her about the harvest, fortune, marriage, and skill. In addition, there are also men carrying water to "hold seven waters", putting wreaths on yellow cattle to "celebrate the birthday of cattle", women "comparing skillful work and making skillful food", girls "dyeing nails", old people "watching the stars" (predicting drought and flood), boys and girls "listening to night talks under the grape trees", and heads of families "releasing river lanterns" and other activities of praying for blessings and begging for skill. At the same time, the "seven successes and eight failures" blind date custom, which worships the number "seven" with the Qixi culture as its connotation, has also been passed down from generation to generation in Yunxi. The Qixi culture of Yunxi is rooted in the deep soil of the Qixi cultural tradition. It has the same origin and inheritance as the Qixi culture of all parts of the country. It has the commonality of folk culture, and is unique and gifted with distinct local characteristics. This cultural attribute of obvious differences and integration between commonality and individuality makes the Qixi culture of Yunxi have good compatibility and growth, showing a broad cultural territory and a vibrant cultural prospect. In 2011, the Qixi Festival (Yunxi Qixi) applied by Yunxi County, Hubei Province was approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China to be included in the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage list, project number: -4.
